Trauma surgeon Laurie Punch, MD, knows firsthand the impact of gun violence on the people of St. Louis. She sees it at the Barnes-Jewish Hospital trauma center.... The sudden impact and severity of the injury creates a shock wave that goes beyond the track of the bullet into people, families and communities. Gun violence has always concerned her, but she came to St. Louis in 2016 during an active discussion on how to address the issue. She knew immediately she wanted to get involved. Joining forces with medical student Jane Hayes and surgery resident Erin Andrade MD, MPH, she took up the national Stop the Bleed campaign as a way to empower community members to save lives. Their team earned the trust of community partners, and now trains and supplies people to stop the bleeding in gunshot victims with tourniquets, pressure application and first aid supplies. More than 1600 people have been trained since March 2018. It’s an exceptionally powerful experience to be able to help someone else, says Dr. Punch. We want at-risk youth to know they matter, and they can work to save a life.
