Matthew Meckes and Odelia (Johannes) Meckes, passed in 1989, and his brothers Thomas and Lawrence followed in 2016 and 2006 respectively. Mike was born in Keokuk, IA on August 5, 1943. He lived a long, happy life and died peacefully in his sleep at Research Medical Center. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Alice M. (Maas) Meckes and their nine children: Julie Perry, Connie (Sam) Lobina, Cindy (Tony) Lloyd, Lori (Jason) Obermark, Gretchen (John) Overstreet, John Meckes, Matt (Kaylah) Meckes, Lisa (Charlie) Pritchard, and Mary (Andy Garner - fiancée) Meckes. He was a devoted Grandpa to 14 grandchildren: Jason, Justin, Jordan, Anthony, Alex, Trevor, Thomas, David, Jesse, Ellis, Kyler, Al, Alora and Noah. Mike graduated from Christian Brothers High School in 1961. After school, he enlisted in the Army, where he served in Ethiopia for 18 months as a cartographer. He returned to Quincy and married Alice on June, 7, 1968 at St. Francis Solanus church. They moved to the Kansas City area shortly thereafter to follow a job opportunity shared by a friend. Mike worked 32 years as an artistic engraver for Hallmark Cards. He was a wonderfully handy man to have around slowly remodeling their home from a 2 bedroom / 2 bath to a 5 bedroom / 3 bath all to shelter those he loved. He gave his children lots of fun memories during annual week-long camping trips. He could often be found tinkering on a vehicle or woodworking project while listening to the Royals on the radio. Mike spent many a night challenging his kids to either a game of HORSE around the basketball goal or a ping pong tournament. He loved 1:24 scale model cars / planes / motorcycles; which he enjoyed sharing with his grandkids. He also had a passion for our feathered friends providing an assortment of feeders and seed for them to enjoy while protecting them from the clutches of squirrels, raccoons and deer.

Dr. Stuart Chen - Graveside Funeral Service Military Honors

Mt. Moriah, Newcomer and Freeman Funeral Home / Mount Moriah Cemetery South 18.07.2020

Dr. Stuart Tsau-Shiong Chen, 87, passed away on October 17, 2020, following complications from a stroke. A graveside viewing will occur at 1:30 p.m. followed by a graveside memorial service at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 27th, at Mt. Moriah Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, Missouri, 64131. The service will be livestreamed on this Facebook Page. For more information and to leave condolences, please visit: https://www.dignitymemorial.com...//kansa/stuart-chen-9859654 Stuart was born on August 2, 1933 in Tainan, Taiwan, where he enjoyed a happy childhood with his parents and eight siblings. It was in his childhood where Stuart first demonstrated diligence, devotion, and an easy infectious laugh -- traits that served him well all throughout his life. After earning a medical degree from the National Taiwan University and completing residency and military service, he earned a PhD in microbiology from the University of Minnesota and completed a second residency and fellowship at the Minneapolis VA Medical Center. While in Minnesota he also met and married Yeh-Jung Lee, a fellow scholar from Taiwan. The young couple moved to Morgantown, West Virginia, where in 1972 they were blessed with their treasured daughter, Jennifer. Their final place to call home was Kansas City, Missouri, where they settled in 1976. In Kansas City, Dr. Chen worked as a Gastroenterologist at Truman Medical Center and was also an instructor in the University of Missouri Kansas City Medical School. As teacher and mentor to many aspiring young students and doctors and nurses, Dr. Chen shared many insights and created fond memories over the years. He influenced scores of doctors and nurses and, through them, countless patients who had better health care experiences because of him. Also while in Kansas City, Stuart was active in the local Taiwanese Association and in the North American Taiwanese Medical Association. Throughout his career, Dr. Chen was invited to attend conferences and to deliver seminars around the world. He seized upon these occasions and brought his wife and daughter with him, and the three of them traveled the globe -- Stuart always the dutiful photographer capturing moments for posterity. In 2012, Stuart became an agong (grandfather) when Jennifer and husband Erik brought Margot into this world. Each time Stuart or Yeh-Jung saw or talked to Margot, they lit up as if just discovering they won the lottery. This same reaction was repeated every single time bestowing upon their precious Margot a sense of being loved as only grandparents can. Stuart was a wonderful husband, father, and agong. He was preceded in death by Yeh-Jung and Jennifer, with whom he is now reunited, and his eldest sister. He is survived by granddaughter Margot Lee-Chen Tyler; son-in-law Erik Tyler; his other siblings and many nieces and nephews. He will be greatly missed by family, friends, and colleagues.
