Meeting Recap Our speaker this week was club member Amy Wilkerson, who gave us an update on Rotary District 6080. Our new District Governor this year is Paul Reinert, owner of Integrity Home Health. He’ll be visiting our club soon the date is still to be determined. Mr. Reinert has several goals for District 6080 this year, which include: maintain membership numbers from last year, have average Rotary Foundation giving of $150.00 per member, and have 75% percent of clubs in... the district to receive a District Citation. Amy reviewed the citation requirements for our club and receiving a District Citation should be attainable for us this year. The District Conference will be in Springfield on April 17-19, 2020. The Rotary International Conference will be in Honolulu, Hawaii from June 6-10, 2020. Final Thoughts I think we're going to the moon because it's in the nature of the human being to face challenges. It's by the nature of his deep inner soul we're required to do these things just as salmon swim upstream. Meeting Recap 6-26-18 Jason Pace and Jeff Fugett with the Missouri Highway Patrol were our speakers today. The Missouri Highway Patrol began operations in 1931 with 55 officers. There are now more than 1500 troopers and 2500 civilian employees. Troop D oversees Webster County. There are 296 employees and 148 officers in Troop D, which also has a fully functioning crime lab. Troop D has 18 marine officers, which patrol the district’s waterways. A couple of the major issues in ...the area that the Highway Patrol troopers see are accidents caused by distracted drivers and drugs. Drivers under 21 cannot text and drive and commercial drivers cannot operate a handheld device while driving, but otherwise Missouri has no state laws outlawing texting while driving. Heroin is becoming a huge issue in Missouri, as well as marijuana in the schools. An exciting positive development for the Highway Patrol is the new drone program to investigate crashes. By using the drone, trained troopers can map and film accident scenes without having to enter the roadway. This will be safer for the troopers and allow for quicker clean up. Troopers each investigate an average of 50-70 crashes per year in Webster County. There have been over 200 accidents in Webster County this year with 4 fatalities. See more

Meeting Recap Our speaker today was Dana Ford, the new men’s head basketball coach at Missouri State. Coach Ford grew up in Southern Illinois just 20 miles from Cape Girardeau, Mo. He went to college at Illinois State. Prior to MSU, he coached at Tennessee State. He considers his biggest strength to be recruiting, which is particularly important for a school like MSU to compete with schools in major conferences with more money. Per Coach Ford, television money is taking over ...college sports and is changing competition for schools. Coach Ford cares not only for players’ athletic skills but also their character. MSU is implementing new academic standards. The graduation rate for players has been good, but there will now be a focus on improving GPA. Per Coach Ford, MSU has the best facilities in the Missouri Valley Conference. The major focus in upcoming seasons will be trying to make the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 20 years. Coach Ford is trying to raise the excitement level for students. He plans on attending various student events and he and players will do some tailgating with students to increase fan participation. The new jail-building project is on track, with expected completion in summer 2019. The new jail will have 114 beds, 1 courtroom and will house the entire sheriff’s department. This weeks meeting recap: Our speaker was Joan Barrett, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs at OTC. She provided us with information about OTC and its upcoming ballot issues. OTC has 11,000 students enrolled at the Springfield campus, 95% of which will stay in Missouri. OTC has graduated more than 23,000 students since 1998. More than 20 technical and healthcare programs are offered, including a new lineman program starting up at the Lebanon campus. OTC is the lowest funded c...ommunity college in Missouri at the state and local level. In 2018, the current $.05 property tax will sunset if not renewed by passage of Proposition A. In addition to the ballot issue to renew Proposition A, OTC is also seeking a new nickel in Proposition B with an additional 20-year $.05 levy. If Proposition B passes, OTC would add a Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Technology. The cost on taxpayers would be $10.00 per year on a $100,000 home. See more

Our speaker this week was club member and Superintendent for Marshfield School District, David Steward. David provided us with an update on school improvements and ongoing plans. A bond issue and levy were passed in 2018. With funds from the bond issue, new HVAC systems were installed at Webster Elementary, the junior high and the high school building. There have also been major roof repairs/replacement at several school buildings. The new roofing is under warranty for 20 yea...rs, although they will have to be recoated every 7-10 years. The lower parking lot at the HS was replaced this summer. The water issues had been caused from a broken drainpipe under the lot. The drainpipe was replaced and thicker asphalt was laid to fix the problem. The levy allowed for an increase in salaries (other than for administrators) this year. The theme for Marshfield Schools this year is #MJaysUnited. Staff will approve communication with parents and the community with a monthly newsletter, updates after every board meeting and community service announcements on the video board at school events. Approximately 30 Marshfield HS students will be bussed to OTC for trade classes this year. A technology task force is being established to address how Marshfield Schools can improve use of technology and teacher training on technology. Marshfield is also teaming up with Burrell Health to provide counseling for kids and their families in need of mental health services. A long-range plan is being developed by analyzing demographics, safety, technology and other factors. See more

Meeting Recap We sang Happy Birthday to Jenny Garner and David Steward. Our speaker this week was Julie Conway with Children’s Miracle Network. Cox Hospital has been a CMN hospital since the 1980s. It is one of 170 CMN hospitals nationwide. The local CMN covers 32 counties in Missouri and Arkansas. Referrals are accepted from doctors outside of the Cox network. CMN had a budget of $2.3 million last year, which was spent on special pediatric medical equipment, lodging/travel... expenses for families with a child in treatment, mobile medical unit and telemedicine programs for rural areas, preventative medicine and educational programs like Never Shake a Baby and helmet safety, and the Child Life program which helps children cope with the hospital experience with games, crafts and distraction devices. CMN also pays for meals for family members staying with a child in the hospital. CMN joins with community partners like Wal-Mart, Caseys and other retailers and organizations to raise money. Marshfield Fire Department recently signed on as a fundraising partner. CMN served approximately 5,000 children from Webster County alone last year. See more
