Attention! Spring is around the corner... and so is TERMITE SWARMING SEASON. What is Termite Swarming season you ask? Termite swarming season is when termites leave their underground colonies to search for a new home. The swarms look like thousands of tiny, winged bugs coming up out of the ground. Typically, this happens in the first warm week of spring, after the rainfall subsides, but can continue to occur throughout warm months (though the first swarm of spring is usually ...the largest.) Young, dark-colored termites with wings, called swarmers, fly out of their current homes in search of a new place to start a colony. Once they settle into a new colony, they lose their wings and mate. Will Their New Home be YOURS!? Swarming season puts every house in danger, as termites are seeking new, dry places to live and breed. Winged termites cannot fly very far, so they usually land where the wind takes them, often not that far from their original colony. So, if you see a swarm near your house, odds are another colony may form underground near your house or even INSIDE of it. Are the Winged Bugs in My House Termites? When swarming, termites look more like ants than usual. If you think you may have seen a termite, you can suck it up with a vacuum to quickly dispose of it. This may get rid of the one you’ve seen, but its presence in your home is a sure sign of an infestation nearby. It’s imperative to contact an exterminator right away to find the termite colony and destroy it before they cause damage to your home. Notice swarms near your home?
