Don’t forget as we turn our clocks forward we should also change our smoke detector batteries. If you don’t have carbon monoxide detectors please purchase one. Be safe!

Area fire departments have been very busy with natural cover fires this week and last. Please wait till vegetation greens up to burn yard waste. When you burn, make sure you are away from structures. Have a water source readily available in case you need to control the fire. Notify dispatch (NECOMM) at 573-221-1244 and let them know you are doing a controlled burn and call them back when you are finished burning. Finally use common sense.

Space heater safety: locate at least 3 feet from flammables, always plug directly into outlet. Never use an extension cord. Best practice is to not leave it unattended.

With the threat of winter weather, please remember to allow extra time for your trips. Slow down and allow greater breaking distances and put down that cell phone. We don’t want to meet by accident. Stay safe!

We change our clocks tonight to return to standard time. Just a reminder that you should change out the batteries in your smoke detectors too. Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors save lives!

A company called the ISO (Insurance Services Office) creates ratings for fire departments and their surrounding communities. The ratings calculate how well-equipped fire departments are to put out fires in that community. The ISO provides this score, often called the "ISO fire score," to homeowners insurance companies. Earlier this year ISO conducted an audit of the Hannibal Rural Fire Protection District which included records of maintenance for equipment, training hours, re...sponse times, number of responders and hydrant testing to name just a few. Our district is proud to announce that our ISO class rating has dropped from an 8(B) to a 6. (1 is as good as it gets). The rating went into effect on September 1. The rating is good for structures located within 5 road miles of one of our three fire stations. Checking with one local independent insurance company they stated that for a house valued at $175,000 that the homeowner could expect to save $225 per year on their homeowners insurance. Not all insurance companied use ISO for their risk ratings but would likely remain comparative to companies that do. Some companies require the structure to be within 1000 feet of a fire hydrant. If you live within the district we want you to be aware of this improvement and the potential to save on your homeowners insurance. For those in our district, we thank you for supporting us when you pay your property taxes. See more
