Today, we're looking back at a memorable project: National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) - Southwest Fisheries Lab The 124,000 SF building sits near a coastal bluff next to the La Jolla Shores beach on the Pacific Ocean. The state-of-the-art facility houses both office and laboratory spaces as well as a one-of-a-kind 500,000 gallon acoustically isolated technology tank for aquatic research. The tank’s water temperature can be adjusted from 34 degrees to 80 deg...rees to correspond with the temperature ranges of the ocean. Another key feature of the building is the mechanically assisted natural ventilation system designed to take advantage of the moderate temperatures adjacent to the coast. The GDS design team provided architectural and engineering services, along with ongoing construction administration services.
