‘Twas the night before the NFR, When all through the Globe, Not a creature was stirring, Not even a mouse to behold.... The back numbers were hung on starched shirts with great care; In hopes that gold buckles would soon be theirs to wear. The contestants were nestled all snug in their beds, While visions of round wins danced in their heads. Working hard all year it took, To make the best consecutive 10 nights in the book. Soon there will be quite a clatter, As world records, they will attempt to shatter. Away the broncs will fly like a flash, And the cowboys won’t even bat a lash. Tallman, Seiler and Mooney will marvel and wow, With fans cheering, the cowboys will take a bow. When the pretty ladies and fast horses do appear, The crowds excitement will be quite sheer. With the big horses so lively and quick, We all will know who will be our pick. More rapid than eagles, the horses they came, As they announced each of them specifically by name: Go Sister! Go Louie! Go Missy! Go Valor! Run Mac! Run Paint! Run Truck! Run Chongo! On Misty! On Lena! On Kiss! On Mona! On Hollywood! On Showmance! And last but not least Blue Dean the mighty grey beast! To the top of the alley, be sure to sit tall! Now dash away! Dash away! Dash away all! Into the arena they will fly, With dreams that touch the sky! Now out of the box, the team ropers, they flew; Not only the header but the heeler, too. The cheers of the crowd go up to the roof, As he ropes two, right by the hoof! And if there’s no flag, they will turn right around, With the biggest of smiles that know no bounds. Later in the week the fans will root, As a new pen of calves are loaded in the chute. For the first time in history, with numbers on their backs; Breakaway ropers, the arena floor they will pack. Their eyes how they twinkle! Their spirits how merry! They are blazing a trail, thanks to those like Jackie and Lari. Indeed this year’s NFR will be a great show, Despite the economy taking a blow. These cowboys, they still will try, Even if their horse runs a little by. They nod their head and grit their teeth, Their arms, they encircle the steers head like a wreath. Some have a broad face and a round little belly. And with a good run, some shake like a bowl full of jelly. Some are so good with their hands, You can see it even from the stands. With a wink of his eye and a nod of his head, Will soon give the others to know there might be something to dread. He will speak not a word but go straight to his work, Being cautious so that there is no jerk. The rope soars over the head and under the nose, And with a hooey & a wrap, up in the air, his arms they rose. Finally the bulls will spring from the chute, hang on ‘til the whistle, And you’ll shoot the lead like a ballistic missile.
