IBM was founded on this day, June 16, 1911, and has been one of the largest leading companies in the business-technology industry for over a century. IBM Headquarters is located in Armonk, New York, and was completed in 1997. Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF) approached Zahner with specific design challenges that we were eager to assist with. The designers wanted an softened reflectivity in the facade surface, something which wasn’t offered in architectural metal at the tim...e. The architects also wanted pristine edges at a time when most sheet metal fabrication was done by metal braking systems, which gave the metal corners a rounded radius. Zahner set about developing two technologies that would go on to shape and influence facade design and architecture aesthetics - glass-bead finishing (later named GB-60), and radius reduction technologies. All of the newly completed SoFi Stadium is covered by an independently-supported canopy of translucent ETFE membrane and 34,789 perforated anodized aluminum panels manufactured by Zahner. Designed by HKS Architects, the 70,000-seat stadium also has a 6,000-seat venue and a 2.5-acre plaza. With 3.1 million square feet of space covered by the canopy, it is now one of the world’s largest indoor-outdoor venues. At the base of Brickell Flatiron is a 13-story parking garage, clad in a custom aluminum facade that is both visually-unique and functional, as it allows for ample airflow throughout the garage.
