#OnThisDay in 1928, Brown Gymnasium was destroyed by fire. It was built in 1893 east of Jewell Hall and was deemed one of the first and finest college gyms west of the Mississippi River. The new Brown Gymnasium opened a year later north of the original structure. In 1983 the gym was transformed into Brown Hall after the Mabee Center became the home of Cardinal Athletics.
2020 looked a little different than we had planned, but we continue to work together to maintain a safe community. Here’s your reminder to #MaskUp and practice #SocialDistancing. Let’s have a good #2021, Cardinals.

Our new #ShapeTheFuture grant is designed to promote equity and access to higher education for underrepresented students. With their Jewell education, the first 32 grant recipients will go on to serve their communities in ways spanning from counseling teens with mental health issues to tackling the global water crisis. Meet five of our honorees, Jasmine Malisos, Angel Castrejon, Bobbie Pollard, Noah Mayo and Cameryn Jenkins, and learn how they plan to shape the future: https://rb.gy/abuiqe. #JewellAchieves #OpportunityWithoutBarriers
Mark your calendars, [future] Cardinals! Applications for KC Scholars and Hispanic Development Fund scholarships open January 1 for fall 2021. On April 17, 2018, Alisha Samuel became Jewell's first Black head coach and one of only six Black women to be head coach in men's track and field in NCAA Division II. To this day, Alisha plays an integral part in Jewell athletics and the #JewellFamily as a whole. #ForgingAPath
#LightingOfTheQuad with a twist! The Jewell Electric Light Parade: Twinkle All the Way was a hit! This all-outdoors event was reimagined for pandemic protocols and was reserved for students. The grand marshal, chosen by students, was Cindy Eggleston, barista At The Beak (fifth photo). Santa's "sleigh" was provided by Steve, '84, and Susan Arbo, '86. #HappyHolidays, Cardinals!
Happy #NationalSockDay from our awesome #CardinalSound. Yeah, they get their own socks. We're jealous, too.
Did someone say #CORNHOLE? Our #NonprofitLeadershipAssociation student group organized a cornhole tournament yesterday to raise money for #HopeHouseKC! Thank you, Cardinals, for helping nonprofits live out their mission! #JewellDoesNonprofitLeadership
Meet our newest Cardinal student-athlete pioneer, Kaylee Harker! Kaylee is a #LeesSummitWestHighSchool graduate who is the very first female wrestling signee in #WilliamJewellCollege history. After a 27-year hiatus, Jewell men's wrestling will be reinstated in fall 2021. Jewell will also be one of the first NCAA D-II institutions in Missouri to add women's wrestling. #OpportunityWithoutBarriers
#WilliamJewellCollege tops Washington Monthly's 2020 College Guide and Rankings! Out of the top 248 Bachelor's Colleges, Jewell ranked No. 13 for Contributing to the Public Good. This is based on schools’ performance in research (faculty and students), social mobility (recruiting and graduating low-income and first-generation students) and community/national service (encouraging students to give back to their country). See jewell.edu/washington-monthly-2020.
Students in Jewell’s Nonprofit Law and Risk Management class were busy as bees this semester consulting with MO HIVES, a nonprofit that transforms vacant lots in #KansasCity into bee farms. The class completed an assessment and audit of the organization’s risk management practices and systems, then presented recommendations for improvements and risk mitigation. Thank you, #MOHivesKC, for including our students in your community work! Read more at https://rb.gy/vfpt81! #JewellAchieves #JewellDoesNonprofit
We believe critical thinking should have no barriers. That's why along with lowering tuition price, Jewell increased grants and scholarships for underrepresented students. Enjoy this performance by the #WilliamJewell Concert Choir featuring baritone Riley Findley, ‘20. Yearning to Breathe Free by Ed Frazier Davis was recorded March 6 at the Kauffman Center for the Performing Arts. Emma Lazarus’ text, The New Colossus, is engraved on the Statue of Liberty pedestal.
One of our values at #WilliamJewellCollege is courageous citizenship. What does that mean to us? It means taking the time to educate ourselves, think critically and #VOTE!
#HappyHalloween, Cardinals! Can you spot Billy J? If so, drop an emoji of what his costume is! #Halloween Do you have a Halloween-themed face mask? Snap a selfie and share it with us!
Cardinal Golf alumnus Jim Richerson, '90, was sworn in today as president of the Professional Golfers’ Association. New favorite month: Oc-SNOW-ber!
Which is more beautiful: campus when the leaves are changing or campus when snow is falling? Today, we get both.
This week, we're sharing Carlene Basore's story. After being denied by men's college tennis teams across Missouri, Carlene joined Jewell's team nearly a decade before women's sports achieved varsity status. She was also the first woman inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame in 1994. #ForgingAPath We're so grateful to be able to share these Jewell student-athlete pioneers! Stay tuned for more.
