Next up, we would like to introduce you to Bridget Tyree (@bridget.tyree). Bridget will graduate with a degree in linguistics, with minors in German and computer science. Fun fact about them? They were the co-president of WashU's knitting and crocheting club for 2.5 years. Read about Bridget's favorite memory from studying German: When I was in 102, on St. Nicholas day our professors came in dressed as St. Nicholas and Krampus. They brought in treats and wrapped presents, whi...ch were randomly passed out at the end of class and contained different German books. We spent the majority of the class period playing Kahoot, sometimes even playing against the professors. Honestly, that experience was really wonderful, and is probably what pushed me to continue taking German courses and eventually minor in German. Herzlichen Glückwunsch, Bridget! #washu21 #washu #deutsch #germanmajor #germanminor #washutogether

Next we celebrate Grace Klutke (@grace.klutke). Originally from Venice, Florida, Grace will graduate with majors in Political Science and Global Studies and a minor in German. She plans to attend law school this fall. She says: One course that stands out to me as a particularly terrific memory from my German studies was a German Language class I took sophomore year with Herr Peter Ogunniran. Herr Peter approached each day of the course with enthusiasm. He made the learning ex...perience exciting for the entire class - whether we were studying verb conjugations or German Opera. My classmates and I ended that semester with a newfound excitement for German studies. This passion for German studies carried me through the rest of my WashU career. Over the next two years, I had the pleasure of following my interest through more exciting German courses, interning in City Governance in Germany, and working with Dr. Tatlock on research topics related to German authors and their texts. Herzlichen Glückwunsch, Grace! #washu21 #washu #deutsch #germanmajor #germanminor #washutogether

The last of our 2020 undergrads we celebrate today is Brandon Hutchison. Brandon is from Troy, Missouri and he graduated with a major in Chemistry and a minor in German. After graduation, he will be teaching high school chemistry in St. Louis through Teach For America! Here's what he said were some of his favorite things about the German Department. ... "I liked reading 'Iwein' written by Hartmann von Aue in the 13th century. It is an action filled adventure with a lot of twists and turns that kept me captivated from beginning to end. It was also interesting to see the ramifications for things like lying and deception in Arthurian Romance. I wasn't able to go abroad during undergrad because I was on varsity track, but I plan to go to Europe next year to see as many of the places we have studied as possible." Herzlichen Glückwunsch, Brandon! #washu20 #washu #washutogether #deutsch #germanmajor #germanminor

Today is our final day celebrating the Class of 2020. Meet Lilly Wurm, one of our minors! Hi Everyone! My name is Lilly Wurm, and I am from right here in St. Louis. I am graduating with a major in International and Area Studies, and my minors are in German and Legal Studies. At the moment, I will be working in product development for @shop2lu after graduation, which I am so excited about. There have been so many awesome things that I have learned and discovered through the G...erman program at WashU. Through Prof. Fischer, I found my favorite German Film: Oh Boy! (2012). Prof. Kita showed my 340 class how awesome Vienna is...which I wish to visit after quarantine is over. Regardless of which awesome Professor was teaching, the German department has shown me so many awesome things. For anyone at WashU wanting to try a new language, choose Deutsch Herzlichen Glückwunsch, Lilly! #washu20 #washu #washutogether #deutsch #germanmajor #germanminor

Next up is Alex Armour. Here's what he says! I am graduating with a Systems Science and Engineering major and minors in German and Computer Science. I'm from Sudbury, Massachusetts and have been learning German for the past 8 years. My passion for the German language began because both of my parents speak the language and my grandmother is originally from Hamburg. For me learning about German language and German culture is a fantastic way to combine all of my different inter...ests. In summer 2018, I completed an internship with the company Stihl in Stuttgart. In my free time I love to play soccer. After graduating I will begin a Technology Consulting position at PwC in Chicago, and I hope to find further opportunities to have more experiences with German. My favorite German memory was taking German Literature and the Modern Era with Professor Kita. I hope to visit Köln one day and to spend more time in Berlin. Herzlichen Glückwunsch, Alex! #washu20 #washu #washutogether #deutsch #germanmajor #germanminor

Today, we continue the graduation celebration with a profile of one of our minors, Yumi Sasaki. Yumi is originally from Tokyo, Japan now calling St. Louis her second home and is a Biology major with a German minor. One of her favorite memories studying German at WashU is when she studied abroad in Göttingen and found, not only the confidence to speak German, but also many lifelong friends. Yumi is the 2020 recipient of the David Bronsen Prize for Excellence in German Studies.... The prize was established in honor of Professor David Bronsen, a distinguished scholar, teacher, and long-time member of the German Department. It is awarded to a graduating German major on the basis of excellent German language skills and superior academic achievement. Today, we start celebrating our graduating seniors in the class of 2020! We hope you enjoy getting to know them a bit. Our first featured student is Luke Nadell (@nadellluke) who is a Physics and German double major. Luke is this year’s recipient of the James McLeod Award for Achievement in German. This award was established in honor of Dean James McLeod, an esteemed professor in the German Department, as well as an exceptional colleague and mentor. The award is given to a g...raduating German major on the basis of overall excellence in German studies and in extracurricular involvement in departmental activities. Herzlichen Glückwunsch, Luke! Keep reading to check out his favorite memories of the German Department. I am from Rye Brook, New York and studied Physics and German as a double major. I really enjoyed the 2015 film "Victoria, which really just places you directly into the story with the characters and was ultimately a very unique experience. Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" (1927) and "M" (1931) were also very thought provoking and really separates filmmaking of the time as an art form, in contrast to the modern mentality that often dominates filmmaking where entertainment comes before the art. It's a bit difficult for me to name just one favorite department memory since I really enjoyed my time here, but I suppose the very beginning of German 101 with Frieda Fichtner sticks out in my mind. As part of the immersion experience, she would give us commands in German, like "Gehen Sie an die Tafel!" and it was a blast just trying to figure out what she wanted us to do. I think it was a great bonding experience as well and I stayed friends with a bunch of those classmates throughout my college career, whether they kept up with German or not. German-speaking place to visit: Switzerland Favorite German word: das Eichhörnschen #washu20 #washu #deutsch
