When you get deported, you get deported practically with nothing, Vivar said. You don’t have family, you don’t have money, you don’t have a support system to assist you, it is very drastic the consequences that they face. Currently, the office is helping about 50 veterans who have been deported to other countries around the world, the majority of whom are in Mexico.

Discussing the, far too often misunderstood, origins of this international day for the recognition and celebration of Peace.

Over one hundred years ago the world celebrated peace as a universal principle. The first World War had just ended and nations mourning their dead collectively called for an end to all wars. Armistice Day was born and was designated as a day to be dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be thereafter celebrated." After World War II, the U.S. Congress decided to rebrand November 11 as Veterans Day. Honoring the warrior quickly morphed into honoring the military and glor...ifying war. Armistice Day was flipped from a day for peace into a day for displays of militarism. Veterans For Peace has taken the lead in lifting up the original intention of November 11th as a day for peace. As veterans we know that a day that celebrates peace, not war, is the best way to honor the sacrifices of veterans. We want generations after us to never know the destruction war has wrought on people and the earth. We know many of you have been experiencing a sigh of relief over the election results and many of you joined street celebrations and protests calling on election officials to continue to Count the Vote. The efforts by many of you and led by organizers of color all over the country show how important it is to be engaged in building relationships and showing up to talk to people. We saw many veterans in the streets, speaking out! This week lends another opportunity to raise... your veteran voice. Wednesday is Armistice Day. We know that mainstream rhetoric on this day is nationalistic and celebrates the ever-expanding military. Veterans For Peace has taken the lead in lifting up the original intention of November 11th as a day for peace. As veterans we know that a day that celebrates peace, not war, is the best way to honor the sacrifices of veterans. We want generations after us to never know the destruction war has wrought on people and the earth. We know that regardless of who is President, the legacy of U.S. wars and violence remain. We still are in a country that is waging war in multiple regions across the globe and at home our borders are increasingly militarized and police kill with almost no oversight or consequence. We, as Veterans For Peace, will need to remain vigilant in pushing this new administration to have pro-peace Cabinet appointments and to not fill their ranks with neo-liberal warhawks and to decisively reduce the Pentagon budget. Armistice Day is more important than ever to show that anti-war sentiment is not going away and we want these issues to be a core part of governance.
