We’re honored to kick off Black History Month by showcasing prominent African American pioneers in the field of health and medicine. This week we're recognizing Mary Eliza Mahoney, the first African American to be educated and work as a nurse in the United States. In 1879, Mahoney was the first African American to graduate from an American school of nursing and would go on to form the National Association of Colored Graduate Nurses (NACGN) with two other colleagues. The NACG...N sought to improve the educational and nursing practices of fellow African American nurses and fought to eliminate racial discrimination in the registered nursing profession and, eventually, helped increase the acceptance of black women into notable medical platforms. The NACGN would eventually merge with the American Nurses Association in 1951. Mahoney would be inducted into the American Nurses Association Hall of Fame in 1976 and into the National Women's Hall of Fame in 1993. Her efforts will never be forgotten.
