#ICYMI U.S. Coast Guard Sector Upper Mississippi River Shallow Water Response Team are making preparations to respond to areas affected by #HurricaneDelta. W...e also want to remind you all that if you are in a #lifethreatening situation, you should call 911 to report your distress and try to avoid using #SocialMedia to report your distress. Again DO NOT use Social Media platforms to report distress as it is hard for rescue crews to keep track of emergency situations. #Delta #Storm2020 #USCGDelta, #Ready, #Relevant, #KnowYourMil

Happy 101st Birthday to "The Coast Guard Lady", Lois Bouton! While we couldn't gather in-person to celebrate, we thought we'd share some photos from her 100th B...irthday celebrations last year in Bentonville, Arkansas. A Coast Guard SPAR during the Second World War, Lois is a proud member of USCG Aux Beaver Lake Flotilla - NW Arkansas, an Honorary U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Commodore and an Honorary Master Chief, presented by the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Coast Guard! Lois was also named a Plankowner of the National Coast Guard Museum Association and received greetings from the Grand Haven Coast Guard Festival, as well as a number of personal tributes from current and former Coasties who have corresponded with her over the years! Happy Birthday, Shipmate! #thecoastguardlady #SemperParatus #uscg #uscgaux #USCGR AUXPA1 Wilkinson

#NauticalTerminologyThursday Port and starboard unambiguously refer to the left and right sides of a vessel. Starboard derives from the Old English steorbord, ...meaning the side on which the ship is steered. Before ships had rudders on their centerlines, they were steered with a steering oar at the stern of the ship on the right hand side. This provided convenience and comfort for right-handed helmsmen, which accounted for the majority of sailors. Port derives from the Old English term bæcbord, meaning the side at the back of the steersman, which was later replaced by the Middle English word ladebord then altered in the 16th century to larboard. This side of the ship was also used as the side to load and offload supplies in a port, contributing to the choice of the current term today. Due to continuous complaints of confusion between the two words, larboard and starboard, the Royal Navy ordered in 1844 that port be used instead. The United States Navy followed suit in 1846. Today both sides of a vessel are designated with a specific color, red for port and green for starboard, for navigation lights in order to more easily distinguish them.
