If you’re planning to hire help for haying this summer, then check the @University of Missouri Extension (MU Extension) custom rates guide to gauge what’s an appropriate rate to pay for cutting, raking, baling and hauling hay. Written by extension professor Dr. Ray Massey, the guide stresses to discuss expectations for any custom job before entering an agreement. The rate paid will depend on these expectations, your own costs and other job-specific factors. Beginning farmers may not have the capital needed to start or expand their own cattle operations. In a Progressive Cattle column, field specialist Wesley Tucker suggests that those new to the industry consider alternatives such as leasing land or cows or entering into custom-grazing contracts to get their start in the cattle business. These arrangements may enable you to access land and capital with less financial investment. Succeeding with these models demands good communi...cation. Cultivating a strong landlord-tenant relationship means more opportunities may arise for you in the future.
