The story of how Truman decided to acknowledge the Middle East region of Palestine as an international haven for Jewish refugees after World War II remains familiar to Truman's admirers. https://fal.cn/3gaeQ
This week’s #MissouriMonday comes from Rosendale, in Andrew County. As we saw earlier in this series, veterans often wrote to Truman to try and get assistance in gaining benefits from the Veteran’s Administration. This particular veteran, Mr. A. L. Beall, did not apparently have a service-related condition that would qualify him for benefits, but wrote to Mr. Truman anyway, asking about legislation that might be passed regarding additional aid for World War I veterans. Our #FileUnitFriday this week is material related to the Nuremberg War Crimes Trials, which we recently added to the National Archives Catalog. This report from June 1945 was given to Truman by Justice Robert Jackson, who Truman appointed as the Chief Counsel for the United States Prosecution team at Nuremberg. You can view the full document here: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/207523458; browse the full File Unit here: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/750292.
This #MissouriMonday is our first post about the 1934 Senate campaign! We have a number of excellent resources available on this campaign, so we will be featuring more later in the year! Truman competed against two other candidates in the Democratic primary in August, so he spent much of June and July out on the campaign trail, getting to know voters throughout the state. However, he was not always successful. On June 9, 1934, Truman noted in his diary that he visited the town of Buffalo, in Dallas County, and wrote No Democrats in town. #Missouri200 #Missouri2021
#MissouriMonday this week finds us in De Soto, in Jefferson County on the eastern side of the state. While Truman received many requests from constituents for assistance in getting Jewish relatives out of Europe before World War II, not all of the requests were from Jewish people. This letter to Jim Theodoro regarded his request to get his nephew out of Greece. The immigration law in operation at the time had a fairly small quota allowance for immigrants from Greece, and Mr. Theodoro’s nephew might not be able to come to the United States for at least three years. On this day in 1946, Margaret Truman graduated from George Washington University with a Bachelor of Arts degree. Her father, President Harry S. Truman, also received a degree - an honorary Doctor of Laws degree! You can see an excerpt from the newsreel footage of this event on our YouTube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch
Our #FileUnitFriday this week is in honor of Hanukkah! We recently digitized this small file unit related to Touro Synagogue, the oldest surviving Jewish synagogue building in North America (built in 1763). It became a National Historic Site in 1946, and Truman sent a message to them in 1947 for the official dedication as a National Historic Site. See the full file unit here: https://catalog.archives.gov/id/830602 #HappyHanukkah
Military historian Gates Brown of the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College examines this critical time of transition, in which Truman acknowledged feelin...g like the moon, the stars, and all the planets had fallen on me. His unflinching responses fundamentally shaped the postwar world and the Cold War that was soon to come. Ever feel like you're having "one of those days?" As we continue to add materials to our YouTube page, we found this clip a bit comforting, knowing that ex-Presidents can have one of "those days" as well. Mr. Truman was struggling to remember his lines while filming an episode of his "Decision" television series in this outtake. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tExzWfIyHlc&feature=youtu.be
