Happy Birthday, Stowers Institute! Our research facility opened in the fall of 2000.
Many thanks to PREP-KC for partnering with us for this week's program, Shades of Science: Amplifying Diversity in the Life Sciences. We're grateful to the five speakers who shared their experiences with Kansas City-area teachers and students.
Over 300 people have registered for Hopi Hoekstra's BIG IDEAS @ScienceStowers lecture tomorrow! Want to join them? Register now for the free online event: http://bit.ly/2ZhPDdB
Why do animals vary in color, and how does it happen? Next Tuesday, geneticist Hopi Hoekstra, PhD, will discuss the many ways that color is made, used and perceived by animals and how this diversity testifies to the power, elegance and ingenuity of natural selection. Register now for the free event: bit.ly/2ZhPDdB
Don't miss next week's BIG IDEAS lecture from Hopi Hoekstra, PhD! Register now for the virtual talk titled "Nature's Palette: The biological significance of color." Hoekstra is a Harvard geneticist and HHMI investigator. bit.ly/2ZhPDdB #BIGIDEASKC
Thursday's Q&A session about the PhD program at #GSSIMR will include Investigator Tatjana Piotrowski, PhD.
If you're thinking about pursuing a PhD in basic research, join the live Q&A with predocs and faculty on Oct. 22 to get an idea of the graduate school experience at the Stowers Institute.
Hopi Hoekstra's virtual BIG IDEAS @ScienceStowers lecture is coming up soon! Once you've registered for the free event, take a look at past BIG IDEAS lectures like Bonnie Bassler's Tiny Conspiracies. Hoekstra's talk will be Tuesday, October 27. Register for free here: http://bit.ly/2ZhPDdB
Chongbei Zhao, PhD, is taking part in a cell culture master class today hosted by Science. Zhao, the head of Tissue Culture and Media Prep, is one of three speakers who will be discussing types of contamination and pointers for reducing it. https://bit.ly/3n5w99i
Congratulations to Assistant Investigator Nicolas Rohner, PhD, who received an NIH Director's New Innovator Award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). This prestigious award, from the High-Risk, High-Reward Research program, supports unusually innovative research from early career investigators. The Rohner Lab's research focuses on metabolic dysfunction and adaptation in cavefish and its implication for human metabolic diseases such as diabetes. https://go.usa.gov/xGFQ2 #NIHHighRisk
Thinking about getting your PhD? Here are two great opportunities to learn more about #GSSIMR!
How and why do organisms evolve through natural selection? Hopi Hoekstra, PhD, employs genetics to understand the process. Join us on October 27 for a virtual BIG IDEAS lecture titled "Nature's Palette: The biological significance of color" featuring Hoekstra, an HHMI Investigator at Harvard University. The online event is free but registration is required. http://bit.ly/2ZhPDdB
The Rohner Lab made it to the cover of Nature Ecology & Evolution with their recent study on cavefish resilience and immune system evolution. The work, which examines how immune systems evolve with few parasites around, was led by former postdoc Robert Peuss, PhD. Check out the article here: https://rdcu.be/b5JCo
