The one line I hate to hear is I used to lift when I was younger. Sure life gets busy as we get older. You get a job. Have kids. An injury throws you off track. There’s a thousand reasons people will throw out as to why they don’t lift any more. . Understand that the moment you quit lifting and pursuing strength, you take one step closer to not having it anymore. Sure we all lose strength as we age, but you’re in control of how fast that happens. . Lifting is an essential... part of life. I’m not saying you have to be a competitive Powerlifter - but resistance training with movements like squats and deadlifts should be something everyone trains. . The athlete in today’s photo is 90 year old Joe Stockinger, who deadlifted 405 for 3 reps! Shout out to Joe for being a model for us all to follow & his coach @spartandonovan0709 for sharing his lifts with us all. . Tag a friend you want to be training with when you’re 60,70,80 & 90 like Joe! ___________________________________ See more

People love to dismiss what they do not understand. To an outsider of the ‘iron game’ (which unfortunately includes many in today’s medical society) lifting heavy appears dangerous. Quite the opposite! . When performed with optimal technique & appropriate loads, lifting can be THE BEST method to help us maintain functional strength & the movement capabilities we want/need for the rest of our lives. . I’m not saying with this post that everyone needs to become a world class... powerlifter and deadlift a house every week. But building the strength to pick up a heavy weight from the ground with good technique (aka while maintaining a stiffened) back shows you have the capacity to handle LIFE. Picking up a child from the ground or a box in your garage all of a sudden is WELL within your means. The ability to deadlift heavy (relative to your abilities) is therefore a buffer for life & gives you the opportunity to handle stress & keep going. . So the next time someone says deadlifting is bad for your back... kindly tell them they’re wrong & not having the ability to deadlift is much worse. . Tag a friend below that needs to hear this today. __________________ See more

Are you a part of the long femurs club? Are you frustrated with front squats & cleans because you can’t get that ideal upright chest position? . Understand you’re not alone. You see, we’re all just trying to find the most optimal technique for the body we have. Some people have been gifted anatomy that allows for a very upright chest position & deep squat - while others have not. That doesn’t mean you hang up the shoes and stop lifting - you just have to recognize what t...hings you can change (mobility wise) what things you can’t (bone structure) and work to get 1% better each day. . As long as you’re staying balanced (bar over mid foot when viewed from the side) a forward lean of the chest may be needed for some when front squatting because of their torso/limb lengths. That doesn’t mean it’s wrong - it just means you’re likely not going to be a world champion weightlifter. So you have 2 choices: . 1 Keep front squatting within your capabilities & work on your mobility/wear weightlifting shoes to help optimize positions as much as possible. 2 Switch to lifts that may be more accommodating to your anatomy & needed torso lean for balance - such as a back squat. There is not a one-size-fits-all way to squat, but the squat as a movement is something I believe everyone should train. . What are your thoughts on this topic? ______________________________ See more

Now any discussion of ‘Butt Wink’ is usually on the potential injury risk as the more movement that occurs at the lower spine in a concentrated manner under load does increase long term risk of injury. But today I want to talk about whether or not this is a bad thing performance wise. When the spine starts to move under load it effects our ability to continuously produce power. Think, if the spine goes, the lift goes. So when lifting our goal should be to prioritize s...pinal mechanics. The more load you’re lifting, the more stability in this area will lead to optimal performance. Shout out to Darren Barnes for sharing his experience with us all today.

Have you been told "you'll never lift again" by a doctor before?Tell me your story in the comment section below. . Many medical doctors commonly see abnormal findings (like a bulging disc) and interpret them to be recent developments. Basically if they see something that looks off on the scan, they assume it to be the exact cause of the newly developed pain! . Research has estimated that almost a third of healthy pain free 20-year-olds currently have a disc bulge in ...their spine! This number increases 10% every decade, meaning 45-50% of people between the ages of 40-50 have a disc bulge but with no back pain at all. It is highly likely to have abnormal scary findings on the MRI if you’re above the age of 60 but many of these individuals have no low back pain at all. . Can a disc bulge create back pain? Sure. But just because there is one that is picked up on an MRI does NOT necessarily mean it is the root cause of your pain. . Even if it is, a disc bulge is not an automatic "you'll never lift again" sign! With proper rehabilitation to eliminate painful triggers for symptoms and a plan to build capacity - MANY people can fully return to the things they love to do (including lifting). . Check out my recent video from 4 days ago on a weightlifter who was told this exact line and is successfully returning back to lifting! _____________________________ See more

Today we’re going to talk about how certain athletes can unleash tremendous strength and power during lifts through a process called densifying neural drive. We’re then going to learn how failure to maintain neutral drive can lead to technique faults and a failure to complete any more reps. Special thank you to Dr. Stuart McGill @backfitpro for his collaboration in making today's post. Also s/o @dynamicdiscdesigns_3dmodels and @3d4Medical with the Complete Anatomy app for the visual of the body.

Core exercises don’t always need to be bodyweight movements like bird dogs, dead bugs or planks. They also don’t need fit within the corrective exercise realm. You can also get a great core workout by just doing your traditional lifts with supper slow tempos, adding pauses & working to maintain great technique. . This is because our goal as athletes is not to use core work to build a 6-pack...but rather to build a more stable trunk that helps improve our movement cap...acity & performance. This means core work comes down to the end goal of promoting improved movement quality. . I’m not saying to skip out on bodyweight movements like the bid dog. I think they are great for teaching core stability & work amazing as a primer for a healthy athlete during warm ups before lifting. BUT understand that we can also improve our core stability capacity through more loaded movements in our training for even more long term benefits. . So at the end of the day, this exercise I shared today isn’t all that revolutionary at all. It’s just a simple understanding of how to progress core work with the end goals in mind. Tag a friend who needs to try this not so revolutionary core exercise. ___________________________________ See more

Have you been there? In our pursuit of amassing strength, we all push the envelop. The competitor inside drives us to complete one more rep, put 10 more pounds on the bar and take one more attempt at setting a record lift. This determination is vital if you want to excel as a strength athlete. However, it can just as quickly be a double edge sword. . This mindset has created a cycle where some athletes continue to lift and push through pain until they literally break. It is n...ot until the pain affects performance that athletes finally seek help. We must put a stop to this broken system and cycle of lift lift lift, break. While it is impossible to completely eliminate all aches and pain with weight training, it’s something that can have better control over. It all starts with having the difficult discussion with yourself and deciding it's time to figure out why the pain is there and not continue to push through it. . Are you currently dealing with an injury and frustrated with how it's affecting your performance? Let me know in the comment section below - I want to make content that helps you. ________________________________ See more

Taking this approach & trying to make every single lift look amazing (from my lightest warm up on up) has made a huge difference in my own training. As @eddycoan told me during our podcast together, you should approach the barbell the exact same EVERY single time. If that’s how the greatest powerlifter of all time does things - you should listen. . Tag a friend below who needs this advice. ______________________________
