We are getting in the Halloween spirit by sharing works with a spooky vibe currently on display in our galleries. Today: a skull marks the spot! "Nothing on the face of the earth has a more forbidding beauty than a cypress swamp." - Thomas Hart Benton. Currently on view in "Creating an American Identity. Check out the photo album for our latest special exhibition, a traveling show of self-portraits from the Smithsonian's National Portrait Gallery. This exhibition examines how artists in the United States have chosen to portray themselves since the beginning of the 20th century. Through painting, drawing, photography, printmaking, and video, these artists raise important questions about self-perception and self-representation. The exhibition includes 58 self-portraits by art...ists such as Robert Arneson, Alexander Calder, Lois Dodd, Deborah Kass, Elaine de Kooning, Jacob Lawrence, Louise Nevelson, Irving Penn, Robert Rauschenberg, Fritz Scholder, Roger Shimomura, Edward Steichen, and many more. The exhibition was curated by Brandon Brame Fortune, Chief Curator Emerita at the National Portrait Gallery. Open through January 17, 2021. Free admission. Please remember to wear your face mask. "The exhibit which runs through Jan. 17 overlaps "This and That: Cartoons by Bob Palmer," late editorial cartoonist for the News-Leader. Museum Director Nick Nelson says the overlap was intentional. The editorial cartoons examine who we are collectively, while the self-portraits show how we have seen ourselves over time. 'This is going to be a really exciting exhibit,' Nelson says. 'I think both of these shows are about literally and figuratively holding a mirror up to ourselves." - Jan Peterson, Springfield News-Leader

"Self-portraits in general are always fascinating, especially now when everyone takes selfies and is a self-portraitist anyway,' says Sarah Buhr, the museum’s curator, who worked with the Smithsonian to bring the nationally touring exhibit to Springfield... 'We’re excited because there are a lot of works in the exhibit that we could never show, or they’re self-portraits of artists we have in our collection,' Buhr says. 'It seemed like a really great fit to augment our collection." - Jan Peterson, Springfield News-Leader "Eye to I: Self-Portraits from the National Portrait Gallery" opens tomorrow, Saturday, October 24 at 10 AM. Free and open to the public. Please remember to wear your face mask.
