How many Broilers per Acre do you grow? Using a 1/4 mile section (40 Acres) and assuming we have 40’ shelters moved once daily, 1/4 mile = 5280/4 = 1320’ on a side... 1320/40=33 moves if they go end to end which is about perfect for a batch of broilers 1320/20 = 66 lanes If a grower puts 1000 broilers out per batch (2 shelters of 500 each) and puts a new batch out every week she could run 33 weeks or almost 8 months, eg., April 15 to Nov 1, and raise 33,000 broilers. 33,000/40= 825 broilers per acre. This may be a reasonable system for most farms between 35-45* latitude. What is your latitude and broiler season length? Below 35* latitude growers can grow 10 months of the year in moveable shelters. In south Texas and Florida 11 months with a summer break for the extreme heat. In Florida the sandy soils drain quickly and thrive with two broiler passes per year, giving Florida producers a large advantage in land and resource utilization. So...how many broilers per acre do you grow? How has this changed with shelter design? With your net per bird, how many dollars does your broiler enterprise contribute per acre?
Move planning. Assembling. Brooding. Wind mitigation. Catch techniques. Turning. Winterizing. Transporting between farms. Tarping. Nest boxes. Watering. Misting. Feeding strategies. We have had interest in a LARGE SHELTER FOCUSED discussion group here. Anyone interested in a Schooner/MRC/Hoop Coop non-type discriminating forum focused specifically on large movable shelter management issues? MOVE PLANNING EXAMPLE: With two or more units, what are the best movement, staggering, turning at the end row strategies?
