#Repost @jasonhammel with @make_repost 21 years ago today Lula has its first service. All morning long I’ve been writing in my notes different things I want to say. I miss Lula so much. I miss my team. Real bad. And I’m worried I won’t ever see them here again. Usually September 2nd is a quiet proud moment for me and Lea. On the most anniversary mornings, I would walk into the restaurant as everyone was setting up, music loud as it gets. Sometimes it was fantasy, or tha...t thing, that thing. Songs that made the work feel lighter than it was. People would be talking about a film or the night’s plans or a grant they were hoping to get or just whatever. Gossip. Laughter. Good morning, I’d say to the cooks hustling to set their stations before the line began to form. Good morning. I loved saying this to everyone and I miss it so bad now because in its absence there’s also the absence of its hope and promise. I was 27 when I started this work. I knew almost nothing. Little experience, no culinary school, certainly no backing. Lea and I were inspired by Logan Beach Café, where we had met, to create an artists’ space, with our own hands to take risk and then possibly, haltingly, to flourish into something new. Although so much is gone, the part worth saving is still with me. I might be 48 and weaker in the knees than I was. But I do believe in our potential to learn and grow and develop, to work with hope and passion like when I was younger and less afraid. It’s not a time to celebrate Lula’s birthday. There are too many in our community who need jobs and support. There are farmers just holding on. There are many restaurants that I know won’t make it through winter. We are making every effort to hold on till our 22nd birthday. But we don’t believe in a comeback; we believe in a new thing, a rebirth. Maybe we should start counting birthdays all over again at 1. Next September 2nd I hope the music will still be loud when I walk in and say good morning to everyone, the young voices all around me, talking books and music, alive and searching still.

thanks to everyone that’s reaching out about our reopening and some of the private chef dinners! unfortunately w the current capacity restrictions and how the streets operate on the weekends in @westport_kc it doesn’t make any sense to try and reopen right now w the uncertainty/possibility of further restrictions! however... @portfonda will be back with an exciting new concept right next door but till then i’m hard at work on @hotel_kansascity new concepts @the_town_company_ y @_el_gold! check out this beautiful ceramic from @wolfceramics for our #blueplatespecial!
