Odyssey Chamber Music Series 11.07.2021

The Unofficial Critic's Vote is revealed: "The Odyssey Chamber Music Series was able to present its full season of nine performances plus pre-concert previews of cast and content all free for the watching and listening but with only the performers and a limited number of family members able to enjoy the live performances. Abundant donations allowed the series to finish its season and plans are under way for live concerts beginning in September.... The ear-catching performances were many since January. We will mention only a few here. + The trio of Andrew Wiele (piano), Isaac Foley (bass) and Chris Fusco (percussion) was a part of Brahms vs. Bebop and Bebop won this round. The trio will fit on any jazz stage. + Lauren Miyamoto sent me into the air with Flight of the Mourning Dove. + Kristen Yu played the Allegro from Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 9 twice as a winner in the Pre-collegiate Competition and again as a part of a regular Odyssey program. Kristen is a rising tenth grader at Rock Bridge High School. + A piano piece called The Mill, played by Hans Heruth, who wrote it. + Odyssey artistic director and pianist, Ayako Tsuruta, joined with Colleen Ostercamp, the organist, to fill the church with the sound of Franz Haydn’s The Heavens are Telling from Creation. +And at least two dozen other presentations that made cold nights warm." Columnist Bill Clark and Odyssey goes years back - and yet, he has missed maybe a handful of our events, perhaps less. He pays for all the tickets and even donates regularly, and more. He is one of our dearest audiences, because we often agree to disagree, and there is always something he will mention that makes you think twice over the years. And to this day, he is the only person I know who makes time for over 280 live entertainment shows a year, runs (or used to) a gym AND works out in it, and knows so much about baseball and birds. What an enigmatic individual! If you miss reading Bill, he can be found at https://www.patreon.com/Yeoldclark .

Many thanks to Nollie Moore and the Broadway Christian Church for allowing us to hold the concert there. Our heartfelt, sincere thanks to the First Baptist Church of Columbia for presenting Odyssey for 17 years, now going on 18. What we do, to celebrate music with our friends is a tribute to you and the Columbia community. THANK YOU!

I know everyone’s industry is affected, but did you know these not-so-fun facts on the live entertainment industry: * Legendary New York Metropolitan Opera announced its closure until September 2021. Their musicians, choirs, stage techs, etc, along with the rest of the industry have been without pay since last April. * Broadway is closed until mid-2021 * 6 West End venues THINK they can open right now.... * Cirque du Soleil went bankrupt and cut over 3500 jobs. * Feld Entertainment (family tours - Disney on Ice, Monster Jam, circus, etc) has permanently fired 90% of their workforce. * Live Nation and other concert promoters have laid off a majority of their employees. * Talent agencies who plan & book concerts, appearances, festivals, etc have laid off over half their employees. * Cruise boat artists are unemployed and amusement park productions have no idea when they will be rehired. * There are no concerts, festivals, or tours scheduled until 2021 and if they don't perform next year they are likely to go bankrupt & may never happen again. No Jazz Festival, no Coachella, no Bonnaroo, no EDC, no Glastonbury, no tours, no ballet, no opera.... it's all gone. * It is predicted that 90% of independent music rooms could close if this continues. * Artistic and musical organizations of all kinds - choirs, theaters, orchestras, dance companies, festivals, music rooms, not to mention all technical and independent suppliers - all are trying to find alternatives to succeed in working. * Over 12,000,000 people work in entertainment production, we are not insignificant and this industry can't reopen until mass gatherings are allowed. This doesn't include the additional dismissal of techs and openers, maintenance staff for bar rooms and staff, safety and thousands of vendors. When you see your entertainment friends begging you to wear masks and stay home, understand that we are watching, helplessly, our industry collapse before our eyes because not enough people care about taking the necessary means to reduce the spread. This is personal to us, our whole livelihood depends on social solidarity and we will not accept to be labeled 'non-essentials'. Music & Arts are necessary for a harmonious, well balanced society. Everyone's career and industry is indefinitely pending. PLEASE wear your mask and wash your hands. I copied this text. Feel free to do the same.

Odyssey concerts are not possible without your support. We are *incredibly* lucky to be able to continue performing for you, even during these unprecedented and uncertain times. If you are able, will you help us offset some of the financial costs this season? 2020 is my 50th birthday! 100% of funds raised goes to Odyssey programs. ANY donation amount take us a LONG way! Help me celebrate our wonderful community musicians who contribute to our town's fabulous and eclectic culture. https://www.facebook.com/donate/817273862375136/210075720474379/
