Well, it's Groundhog Day...again... #TeamNightShift becomes #TeamNoShadow

Who's ready to feel old? Today marks 10 years since the 2/1/2011 North American Blizzard which impacted much of our region. Kansas City International Airport recorded 8.9" of snow, but areas to the east of Kansas City received up to 20" of snow. Where were you during this time and what do you remember most about this winter storm? Let us know in the comments! The precipitation total for KC from Oct 24th through Dec. 28th (66 days) was 1.88". Precipitation over the last 9 days (thru 4pm) 1.94" #DroughtBustin

Rain returns today for much of the area, with a mixture of rain/snow possible by late this evening into tonight. Little to no snow accumulation is expected.

Arctic air is expected to spill into the lower 48 later this week resulting in a significant cool down that will last through much of next week. Take care of any outdoor chores the next few days- you will thank us later.

The climate for January 2021 in Kansas City can be categorized as wet and warm. The average temperature of 34.1 degrees was 5.3 degrees above normal and the 22nd warmest on the 133-year record. We had over twice the normal precipitation at 2.47" which was 1.40" abv normal and the 18th wettest on record. Snow was 5.1" which was 0.5" above normal and the 54th snowiest on record. Perhaps the most interesting stat for Jan 2021 in KC is the coldest temperature we had for the month was only 18 degrees. This is the 4th warmest cold temperature for any January on the 133-year record. Only 2 nights for the month had below normal lows...1/3 when we hit 19...and 1/28 when we hit 18. The other 29 days of the month had lows that were above normal and 1 that was right at normal.

Sunny and mild today. Some areas will eclipse 50F today. Rain moves in early Wed AM and sticks around all day. Rain transitions into a wintry mix and snow overnight before ending early Thursday morning. Minimal accumulations are expected.

Welcome to February-only one month left of meteorological winter! A warming trend is expected the first half of the week, but a cold front is expected to sweep through the region early Thursday leading to markedly cooler conditions late week.

Dense fog once again envelopes much of the area. Below freezing temperatures could result in slick surfaces especially on roads, sidewalks, and bridges. Use caution if traveling this morning. Fog is expected to disperse west to east through the morning.

Our observer at Kansas City International Airport called at midnight and reported 0.64" of precipitation for today. That's a daily record! That broke the old record of 0.37" set in 1992 and 1939.

The severe threat for our area is over for the day. Lingering showers are expected through the late afternoon along HWY 63. If you live east of HWY 63, remain weather aware. The severe line of storms is moving through your area now & will keep moving east this afternoon.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued until 6 PM for much of central MO (along/north of I-70). Main concern is severe wind gusts. Can't rule out a quick tornado developing as well. Central/Northeast MO: Stay weather aware this afternoon!

Those in central MO: stay weather aware today & make sure you have multiple ways to receive warnings. The line of storms currently in Pettis County, MO has been known to produce strong wind gusts up to 55 mph. Strong winds up to 50 mph are also possible in Macon County, MO.

Not only are many people seeing some rain (finally!), many along I-49 are also hearing thunder. It is possible a storm or two gets a little strong, especially as the line moves east. Main concern is stronger winds. #Kcwx #MoWx

Well, all good things must come to an end. A cold front is already through the Metro and has dropped temperatures into the 40s. This front will continue to move southeast this morning...so areas east of KC be prepared the cold is on the way. The cold front is also bringing showers and thunderstorms to the area. A few of these storms may be strong across central Missouri late this morning into this afternoon. The main threat would be for wind gusts 40 to 50 mph and up to nicke...l-sized hail. For #TeamNightShifters do not fret this cold will be short-lived. In fact, after today the rest of the week will return to normal for November with highs in the 50s. And, really, can't we all use a little "normal" right now? Maybe, but we're #TeamNightShift and we just don't do normal very well. Well, we were watching closely to see if we would hold 70 degrees in KC at midnight but the temp has dropped to 68 this hour so we'll have to settle for tying the record for most consecutive 70 degrees days in Nov at 7. For the second straight day, Kansas City has broken the record for the warmest low temperature on record for the date. The low today was only 65 destroying the record of 58 set in 1999. Also, the normal HIGH for today's date is 57...the low today beat that by 8 degrees! #NovemberWarmth #MidnightShiftGlory

Showers and thunderstorms move through the area early Tuesday morning. Some storms may be strong with isolated severe storms possible in central MO. Temperatures take a nose dive relative to last weekend as highs sink to the mid to upper 50s for the remainder of the week.
