So I have been watching this quarantine madness play out for a few weeks now and friends, a lot of you are giving me quite a headache. I’ve abstained from comme...nting on many of your posts because I’m trying to stay impartial, but you all are getting to the point where your paranoia and conspiracy theories are beginning to become dangerous. I haven’t advertised this because I know the storm of questions that will come my way in these times, but I actually work in the Infection Prevention department at a local hospital. If you think you’ve heard enough about COVID-19, come to my world and you’ll really know exhaustion on the topic. This is all we talk about, all we think about, all we read about, all day, every day. A couple of days ago one our physicians was talking about seeing outlandish claims and accusations and he posed the question to himself when does it become my responsibility to speak up? I have asked myself this same question and as someone who loves biology, works in infection prevention, and who lived in China for several years, I have decided I need to at least try and speak reason in these unreasonable times, so please allow me to pose a different view than perhaps you’ve heard. Really everything comes down to a question: which is more plausible? Is it plausible that some nefarious underground organization concocted this virus in a lab, released it in some exotic meat market in Southern China so that it would eventually make its way to the United States in order to make the president look like a buffoon and win the election for the Democrats while at the same time forcing you to get a vaccine that has a tracking chip so that Bill Gates can track you everywhere you go? Or is it more plausible that a virus that normally spends its time in bats mutated (as viruses do all day every day), allowing it to infect a human host and become highly contagious, and that virus was able to spread because the Chinese government hid the outbreak that was going on within their country, not because they were trying to infect the rest of the world but because Chinese culture is all about saving face and communism is all about maintaining control, and they did not want to lose face by admitting to the world (and to their own people) that they were unable to control something within their own borders because that would make them look weak? And then that highly contagious virus spread like wildfire because in this modern world you can literally fly halfway around the world in 12 hours, allowing people to spread this virus for days, sometimes weeks, in all parts of the world before they even knew they were infected. And this virus, like all viruses and bacteria, grows at an exponential rate which means within just a couple of months this virus was able to spread to essentially every country in the world. If you believe the first, then feel free to move on because you my friend are a lost cause. But if you have any reason at all, hear me out on what is actually happening in this country. After a few cities saw a dramatic increase in hospitalizations and deaths due to a severe respiratory illness they decided they needed to take drastic measures to contain this wildfire and shut everything down in order to limit person to person contact, and soon the rest of the country followed suit. And wow, all of that social isolation and free time has really made some people lose their sanity. People are seeing the current decrease in new COVID-19 case numbers and the low census at hospitals and their conclusion is that this was all some fake thing concocted by the liberal media? Seriously? Social distancing is a proven method of pandemic containment. We are seeing lower numbers because we are taking away the virus’ food source. If you haven’t heard the story about St. Louis and Philadelphia during the 1918 Influenza pandemic, let me sum it up: St. Louis locked everything down, Philadelphia did not. St. Louis ended up with a death rate of about half that of Philadelphia...in 1918 when they didn't have ventilators or even antibiotics. It’s really quite an interesting story and I encourage you to read about it. Look, I get it. Not being able to do your normal day to day activities and being stuck at home all day and not being able to buy toilet paper sucks, I’m right there with you. But the thing that bothers me is the same people that are demanding we reopen the country in one breath are cheering on healthcare workers with the next. The problem is those two statements are counterintuitive. If you really want to help healthcare workers, then we must be extremely cautious in our approach so that this virus doesn’t come back in full force and undo everything we’ve worked so hard to achieve. If you want to help those healthcare workers on the front lines then please don’t give this virus any ammunition. Even after you go back to work, keep your distance from others for a while longer. Keep washing your hands. Wear a mask when out in public which, by the way, is not to protect you but to keep you from infecting others. I see many of your comments and I become so very discouraged. Sometimes I think we should just let this virus burn through us because maybe then we’d take this seriously and when the next pandemic hits (which it will) hopefully we will have learned. I certainly don’t want to let this virus spread, and I will do everything in my power to stop that, but that very easily could happen if we don't take this seriously. That, in fact, is the story of Taiwan. Taiwan was hit HARD during the first SARS outbreak in 2003, and they learned their lesson. When this new SARS started to make its way out of mainland China, Taiwan unified and shut everything down immediately. The result: 398 confirmed cases of SARS-CoV-2, on an island of almost 24,000,000 people. The power of social distancing. So please friends, bear with us healthcare workers just a bit longer. We’re trying to help you and if you feed this wildfire of a virus we’re not going to be able to. Please learn the lessons of those who have gone before and take action against this virus. Either way, we in healthcare will fight for you. All we ask is that you do what you can to make our jobs a little easier.
