UPDATE #2 TO THE 05/11/2021 INCIDENT: Formal charges have been filed in Newton County against the individual involved in the shooting incident on 05-11-21 against Newton County deputies. He is identified as Benjamin Chase Ivey out of Granby Mo. In Newton County he is charged with Unlawful Possession of a Firearm, Unlawful Use of a Weapon and Resisting Arrest by Fleeing. All three charges are felonies. There is no bond on the charges in Newton County. ... McDonald County has charged the individual with three counts of First Degree Felonious Assault, three counts of Armed Criminal Action and Unlawful Possession of a Firearm. These are all felony charges and there is no bond in McDonald County on these charges. An investigation of the officer involved shooting is currently being conducted by a team made up of the Joplin Police Department, the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office and Newton County Sheriff’s Office. -Sheriff Chris Jennings

UPDATE TO 05/11/2021 INCIDENT: The Newton County Sheriff’s Office has requested charges be filed in both the Newton and McDonald County Prosecutors Offices against the individual who shot at Newton County Deputies yesterday. We are anticipating charges from Newton County for Felony Resisting, Exhibiting a weapon and Felon In Possession. ... The McDonald County charges being requested are First Degree Assault, 3 counts of Armed Criminal Action and Felon in Possession. The identity of the suspect will be released as soon as formal charges are filed. At this time the suspect is in a Springfield hospital. The investigation is continuing. -Sheriff Chris Jennings

PRESS RELEASE - 05/11/2021 On today’s date shortly before noon, Newton County Deputies attempted to contact an individual that was a suspect in a burglary as well as having warrants for his arrest. At that time the individual pointed a weapon at the officers and fled in a vehicle. A pursuit ensued that began in Newton County and proceeded south into McDonald County. The Missouri Highway Patrol deployed spike strips and managed to flatten two of the suspects tires. ... The pursuit continued a short distance until the vehicle left the road into a field near Highway CC and Highway C (McNatt). The suspect, a 26 year old white male fired shots at Newton County Deputies. The Deputies returned fire and the engagement ended when the suspect was wounded. Medical aid was immediately administered to the suspect and he was transported by ambulance to a Joplin hospital. I have requested both the Joplin Police Department and the Jasper County Sheriff’s Office to assist in the investigation of the incident.
