Beginning in the early 1980's, the National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week is recognized each year to bring attention to those who are truly the first to answer the call in an emergency. If you've ever called 9-1-1, you likely spoke to a Public Safety Telecommunicator, or Dispatcher. The ladies and gentlemen that fill these positions do so with a full understanding of the tremendous stress and immense pressure that will be put on their shoulders. Nearly every call th...at comes through 9-1-1 has someone having the worst day of their life on the other end and that person is depending on the Dispatcher to get them the help they desperately need. The job of the Dispatcher isn't just answering a phone or sending an ambulance. The Dispatcher has to be the voice of calm during a whirlwind of emotions. The Dispatcher has to manage and direct countless emergency responders while simultaneously obtaining critical information from the clouded mind of a caller. The job of a dispatcher is assuring all necessary units are responding to the deadly vehicle crash, while at the same time, apologize to a caller that the power is out and assure them it will be back on shortly. You see pictures and videos reminding you to say "thank you" to so many types of people, but rarely do you see anything asking you to say thanks to a Dispatcher. That is because Dispatchers have a mostly thankless job. This doesn't stop them, however, from putting on the headset and doing the job anyway. Those of us at the New Madrid Police Department are proud of and grateful for our dedicated team of Dispatchers. Please join us in saying Thank You!
