Cool contest, but you need a MO Civil War passport to participate. Lucky for you we have them in our gift shop. Play the game, see Missouri, and learn some stuff. win, Win, WIN.
We can only hope....
Excellent video on the Battle of Island no. 10. Enjoy! Thanks to Jerry Fry for sending us the link. Check out his page, Missouri Civil War Passport program for some great info on what they do.

This video is from October 1990, KFVS, Cape Girardeau, and happened shortly after a 4.8 quake hit the region. This quake seemed to support the prediction made by Iben Browning that massive quake was due to hit on the New Madrid Seismic Zone December 3rd, 1990...30 years ago today!
Today we have the first installment of our virtual Victorian Mourning Practices program. We will have the house in mourning through the end of November if you would like to see it in person.
Beginning November 1 we will be open from 9am to 4pm Mon-Sat and 12pm-4pm on Sunday. We look forward to seeing all of you at the museum!
Great read about early Cape Girardeau and Joseph Lansman, the man who built many of the early buildings in Cape.
Who wants to make some butter? Watch Vicki and learn how? Don't forget to visit the Hunter-Dawson Home when you're in town to see the museum.
Who took part in the Shake Out?
It is a sad day for us here at the museum as we are saying our final goodbye to Ms. Virginia Carlson, who was affectionately known as the ‘Mother of the Museum.’ The museum was born in 1975 when Virginia and Dot Halstead were walking down Main Street and decided something needed to be done with the vacant building at One Main Street. ‘Let’s start a museum!,’ were the words uttered by Dot that would drive the two of them, along with many, many others to spend several decades o...f their lives protecting and sharing the history of southeast Missouri at the New Madrid Historical Museum. Virginia Ann, or VA, as she called herself, had been in poor health for the last year, but now can join her husband Jack and daughter Laura amongst the angels. Her son Pat, our current President, is carrying her legacy at the museum forward. Godspeed VA, you will be missed See more
Viking will be cruising the Mississippi starting in 2022!
Tune in to the live feed to hear from SEMA about earthquake prep, the history and geology of the New Madrid Seismic Zone and more!
Great link here if you are doing research. This link will take you to the State Historical Society of Missouri's digital newspaper collection. There are HUNDREDS of newspapers you can access from all across the state, which date back to the earliest days of our state. Enjoy!!!
Note it is CASH ONLY to take the Dorena-Hickman Ferry right now. We recommend you always check their Facebook page before heading to take the Ferry to see if they are running that day.
Is Southern California susceptible to big quakes? We know now the answer is yes, but a hundred years ago it wasn't quite as clear. Interesting interview with the author.
Decent sized quake at the southern end of the seismic zone.
So, it appears that humans are loud and the stuff we build is louder. Interesting read
We should share this more often....here is a link to the USGS earthquake search page. You can use it to check for any size of quake anywhere in the world!
