Today at court, the issue of arresting a victim of domestic violence for not appearing at court as a witness was brought up. Despite the periodic temptation and kneejerk emotions, in 17 years of prosecutor I never once arrested a victim for not appearing. The emotional and psychological damage to a victim of being dragged to court in handcuffs by the very people sworn to protect her would be catastrophic. She will never trust the system again and the odds of more violence increase. Not to mention, the case will probably not get any better using a hostile witness who had to be forced to appear. I am hopeful that through education and true empathy, we can end this outdated practice

Our legal system, of which I've been apart for many years, is much better at judging people and punishing those who have done wrong that we are at lifting up and rewarding those who are trying to better themselves. Today I had the honor of standing up for a client who has admittedly made mistakes, like we all have, but who has worked and struggled to improve herself and her life. I am so proud of her courage and her hard work! May we never forget that "but for the Grace of God, there go I"!

Not even a broken toe could keep me away from court today! Although, I've had better fashion days. Lol.
