And it's not saturated fat... get rid of foods and environmental factors that cause inflammation and decrease heart disease. I used to teach the American Heart Association recs of decreasing fat and saturated fats until I started looking at the most up-to-date research with an open mind (which wasn't easy being vegan at the time). We are being led by outdated and some even unsupported recommendations thanks to Ancel Keys. Eat real, whole unprocessed foods, and fats are one of the healthiest things you can add back into your diet to support your brain, metabolism and mitochondria.
A huge step in the right direction! After working in hospitals for several years and seeing some of the menu items in the cafeteria, this brings hope Now if we could just change patient menus!
In response to the recent article by USA Today and the announcement from the AHA that coconut oil is harmful...this is based on outdated science that saturated fats are bad for us. One would think that the Heart Association would lay this to rest especially after the meta-analysis in 2015 that showed saturated fats do not raise the risk of death from cardiovascular disease. But then again this is from the same group that says replace saturated fats with corn and soybean oil ...which are highly inflammatory and genetically modified. It's also old science to base recommendations off of LDL ("bad" cholesterol) when some particles of LDL can actually be protective! Here is a great post from one of my favorite RD's about coconut oil and why we should call B.S. to the latest attempt to undermine its health benefits. Is it a miracle food? I don't believe so...but there are several benefits and evidence to prove it. One of these days we'll get it right... https://www.dietitiancassie.com/coconut-oil-bad-heart-re-/
Skip the crappy packets of chili seasoning for this budget-friendly option: Ingredients 1/4 cup Chili Powder... 2 Tbsp Garlic Powder 2 Tbsp Cumin 1.5 Tbsp Onion Powder 1 Tbsp Oregano 1 Tbsp Paprika 1/2 Tbsp Thyme 1 tsp salt (can adjust as needed) Resource: Wellness Mama I used to take the easy route also and bought the packets until I looked at the ingredients. Most have enriched wheat flour, which I have to stay away from, but also sugar and fillers such as maltodextrin. Dangers of these listed below.
Ideas for on-the-fly breakfasts (or any meal)! I particularly like the breakfast bowls and egg wraps :) https://greatist.com//healthy-breakfast-ideas-you-can-meal
