January is National Stalking Awareness Month, an annual call to action to recognize and respond to the serious crime of stalking. For survivors of intimate partner and domestic violence, stalking most often occurs after you leave. Stalking from an abuser commonly includes unwanted contact, spreading rumors, following or spying on you, showing up places where you are, and leaving unwanted gifts. It is serious and often becomes dangerous.

It's not easy to leave in the best of circumstances. COVID-19 has changed some things, but there is still a way out! Talk to an advocate if you need help, advice, or a safety plan. Call 417-864-SAFE

FreeFrom is a non-profit organization that works with and on behalf of survivors to create pathways to economic security and long-term safety. https://www.freefrom.org/ The FreeFrom team knows survivors are their best resource and created these community driven groups to reduce isolation, build community power and increase/maintain financial freedom. You can form a group with other survivors or simply contact FreeFrom and they will place you in a group with other survivors . Tech abuse is when someone uses phones, tablets, computers, and social networking websites to isolate, punish and humiliate domestic violence victims. The United Kingdom passed a law this year making it illegal to use technology to track or spy on partners or ex-partners. "The law specifically defines tech abuse, given its controlling and coercive nature, as a form of domestic abuse." AND it gives police extra powers to respond to cases that involve tech abuse. In the United States, survivors have been able to get recourse under electronic surveillance laws, cyberstalking, voyeurism and identity fraud, but there are gaps that need to be addressed.
