Scams and fraud Alert The Monett Police Department was contacted by a citizen who said they received a phone call from someone claiming to be a police officer. The caller told the citizen they had a warrant for their arrest and attempted to get payment over the phone. This is not a new scam but it is still used frequently. What the caller will say: Hello, this is Officer Ed Speezack from the police department. I am calling to inform you that a warrant has been issued for yo...ur arrest as a result of your failure to show up court or for jury duty. The goal of the caller: To persuade you to pay a large fine to the crooks posing as police either by giving your bank, credit card information over the phone or wiring money to them. Use good sense: The legal system doesn’t work this way. If you were selected for jury duty you would get a notice in the mail. Law enforcement and court officials don’t solicit payments by phone. If you are concerned, contact your county clerk’s office about jury duty and your local law enforcement or court clerk if you believe there might be a warrant for your arrest. Think before you give personal or financial information to anyone.
