The Rhetor used to rank the cutest couples on campus. Anyone know the couples pictured here?

It may not be Mother's Day in the US, but it is in Guatemala and Mexico. Seen here is a Guatemalan mother and baby doll from the Catherine Haymaker collection.

Often mistaken as Mexico's Independence Day, Cinco de Mayo is celebrated to remember the Mexican victory at the First Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Up against a much larger French force, the Mexican Army was able to force the French back. Shown here is a cannon ball from the Mexican War of Independence, although not from the First Battle of Puebla.

Throwback to the original interior of Dockery. When it was completed in 1905, Dockery was the school's first gymnasium. It was renovated in 1960, completely gutting the original interior.

John J. Campbell was hired to teach a few classes at Normal No. 2 in 1873, but became so popular, he was hired full-time in 1875. He helped collect books for the school's library and would tote them around campus in market baskets to lend to students.

Normal No. 2 (UCM) wanted its students to get good experience teaching before graduating, so a deal was made to student-teach in the Warrensburg schools. Wanting better supervision of these budding teachers, Normal No. 2 created a Training School in 1881. The Training School gained such a good reputation, that it became the College Laboratory Schools in 1938, organized into the College High School and College (Central) Elementary. The high school closed in 1976 and the elementary school closed in 1980.

Here's the official WWI service flag of Normal No. 2 (UCM). It was sewn by a literary group on campus during the war. Blue stars signify a student who served, gray stars for those injured in action, and gold stars for those that made the ultimate sacrifice.

The theme of the next exhibit is the first fifty years of UCM. Back then it was State Normal School No. 2. Here is some of the equipment used to map out the original campus.
