The first day of school is drawing nearer and the opportunity for our kids to sleep in is coming to a close. Make sure they are getting the proper amount of sleep or it could effect more than just school work, but their health as well! Lack of sleep increases hunger hormones and less energy to exercise off the extra calories! Ages 3-5: 11-13 hours Ages 5-12: 10-11 hours Ages 11-17: 9.5-9.25 hours #LiveWellFerguson

Live Well Healthy Hero John Cross Live Well Ferguson: What are your routines for staying physically active? John: My routine for staying active is to ride my bike to work as often as possible and walk to/from downtown Ferguson for my errands. When possible, if I miss a day of riding my bike to work, I will try to get a run in at the UMSL gym. I like running more than any other exercise, but I am recovering from a surgery at the moment. Taking walks or going for hikes with... my wife are also great ways to stay active. LWF: How did you develop your healthy habits? John: I hate to sound so old school, but I developed my habit of staying active during my childhood in Ferguson. My friends and I were always outside playing: tag, catch, hot box, climbing trees, basketball, kick the can, riding bikes everywhere, swimming, walking all over town and running cross country in junior high (sorry, middle school now) and high school. I have just never let it go. Hopefully, I never will. LWF: What is your advice to someone struggling to keep a healthy lifestyle? John: For someone who isn't active already, I recommend they figure out what activity they most want to do. Once they have done that, they should try to fit it into their regular schedules. If it doesn't work at a certain time, try another day/time. If it doesn't work there, try a different day/time. Don't give up until you find the right fit for yourself and once you do find the fit, stick with it for a while. Make it your only priority for that day/time. When others ask you to miss it, invite them to join you; not the other way around. Once you have committed to it, you won't leave it and you will feel better about yourself because of it.

Live Well Healthy Hero: Wendie Cummings Elementary Band Director in the Ferguson-Florissant School District Girls on the Run Coach at Griffith Elementary What is your advice to someone struggling to keep a healthy lifestyle?... Set some fun goals and enlist some friends to join you as you tackle your goals together. Some of the toughest runs I've done are my most favorite - like speed work on the track or a 20+ mile hilly run in the middle of August when it's 90 degrees and 90% humidity. I struggle through these tough workouts with my friends who are struggling right beside me. You earn resilience and perseverance with a group of friends. You also become better friends! What is your favorite healthy activity? I train for and run a few long distance races each year (half marathons, marathons, ultramarathons, relay races), and my weekly running mileage is probably around 40-50 miles per week. I love running on the Chubb Trail, at Castlewood State Park, Forest Park, and anywhere outside where I can breathe the fresh air. Being outdoors on a serene, wooded trail is the most appealing way to enjoy my miles. In the spring and summer, I do weekly track workouts with Big River Running Company to make sure I maintain my speed. Running with a group of fast people around a track keeps me feeling young. I also love to ride my bike! I'm married to a competitive cyclist (category 2), and my husband, Dave, and I have traveled to many places (Colorado, Utah, California, New England, France) for great cycling vacations where we seek out tough mountain climbs to tackle. Some of my best memories are from when we rode over 600 miles on a 2 week cycling trip through the Pyrenees and Alps during the Tour de France. We watched a few stages and rode the very same tough routes that the pros compete. It’s pretty awesome when fans from all over the world out on the side of the road for Le Tour are cheering for us as if we were the pro cyclists suffering up some famous mountains (Tourmalet, Alpe d'Huez, Mont Ventoux, Col du Galibier and many more)! There is nothing like riding to the top of a mountain! What motivates you to live a healthy lifestyle? I want to live past 100! I love the challenge of trying to run or ride my bike faster and farther, and that desire keeps me healthy. I want to set a good example for my students, too, by showing them that seeking out physical challenges and crazy adventures helps you grow, despite doubts or fears.

February Healthy Hero: Elizabeth Simons Live Well Ferguson: How do you make active living fun? Elizabeth: I really enjoy exploring. I try to walk, run or bike on as many different Ferguson streets as possible so that I get a chance to see all of the city from an up-close perspective. I often take my bicycle on the MetroLink so that I can explore more of the St. Louis region. I love finding parks, neighborhoods and business districts I’ve never seen before when I’m out for a ...run or a bike ride. LWF: What resources does Ferguson have for healthy lifestyles? Elizabeth: Ferguson has a lot of great social networks of people who support each other’s healthy lifestyle choices such as the Ferguson Running Club, the Couch to 5K Club, the Ferguson Cycling Club and the Youth Bike Club. There are also a lot of great events like the Citywalk Concert Series, the Ferguson Farmers Market, and movies and games in the parks that are great destinations to walk or bike to and from. The free health screenings that are often offered at Sunday Parkways, the Ferguson Farmers Market and other community events are a great way to find out about personal health issues and the resources that are available to address them. LWF: What are some of the additional benefits of living well? Elizabeth: One of the greatest benefits of living well is being a part of a healthy, active and vibrant community. When we are out and about walking, running and cycling, we are able to serve as eyes on the street looking out for one another. We see our neighbors more often and get to know one another. When more people are out being active on the streets, in parks and in other public spaces, our healthy choices just might inspire our family, friends, neighbors and passersby to get out and get active.
