Yesterday’s project upstairs @ Historical Society. Outer wall, took off a layer of drywall, all of the old plaster & lathes. I then insulted it. Ready for sheeting. This is the area where our new furnace & a/c will be in the future. We are still taking donations for this project.

Wilma Louise Hendle

Lewis County Historical Society 13.08.2020

It is again with a heavy heart that we have to say goodbye to another of our devoted supporters and volunteers. Mrs. Wilma L. Hendle, 97 of Canton, Missouri passed away Thursday, February 21, 2019 in the Lewis County Nursing Home at Canton. Funeral services will be held Sunday, March 3, 2019 at 200 PM at Arnolds Funeral Home in Canton, Missouri with Rev. Barb Hagerla officiating. Burial will be in Forest Grove Cemetery, next to her husband, John (Jack). There is so much that ...can be said about Wilma but I will try to keep this simple. Wilma was a special lady who gave of her time and her heart and anything else that she had, if she thought it was needed. I can't think of any civic organization that Wilma and her husband, Jack, didn't have some kind of connection to. Wilma grew up in this area and after they retired and returned here from Chicago, they put a lot of time and energy into the community, in which, they had chosen to spend their later years. Not many people knew how much they did for others because that's the way they wanted it to be. They NEVER wanted any "fuss" about what they did. On a personal note, I have to say that Wilma was a wonderful, loving, generous, and faithful person. I was lucky enough to call her one of my dearest friends for over 30 years. She taught me so many things about life without even knowing that she was doing it. She took a huge piece of my heart with her, when she left and she also still holds a huge place in the part that's left. I will always remember her strength, her love, the sparkle in her eye, and her smile when we were together. Rest in Peace, my friend. You deserve it for a life well lived. I love you, Cindy

Historical Society need your help with matching grant The Lewis County Historical Society of Canton MO is seeking a matching grant of $3000.00 for upgrading our... heating & air conditioner system. Our current system only heats & cools the downstairs. It does have its problems. Since the front main room is all glass, it is hotter is the summer & cooler in the winter than the back room that has no windows. On really hot days it just won’t cool down enough. We are wanting to replace the current furnace & air conditioner with a larger unit that has zones. This will let us control the temperatures better for each room. We then want to move the existing furnace upstairs so that we can heat & cool the upstairs. This is something that we have never done before. The upstairs is mostly storage for things that we don’t have room for downstairs. There are many books, artifacts, records & information that really needs to be better climate controlled to help preserve them. We are seeking a matching grant from the Nichols Foundation. This means they will match whatever we raise up to $3000.00. The estimated cost for this project is: HVAC, $10,000 Insulation $ 450 All new wiring for lights & outlets $200 Conduit & fittings $160 Drywall $30 Total $10,840 We really need your help in this huge project. The deadline for the matching grant is April 1, 2019 but we will take donations at any time. Any gift is very much appreciated. You can mail your donation to the Lewis County Historical Society 102 N. 4th St. Canton MO 63435 You can also stop by on Tuesdays or Thursdays from 9-3 and drop off your donation. We are primarily a genealogy library. We have over 1 million family sheets of paper just in the front room. With some of the best records of families going back to the 1800s & some before. We also have newspapers on micro film, tens of thousands of obituaries & interesting history of Lewis County. We also have advertising items from old businesses on display. We are a 501C3 non for profit organization that is staffed by volunteers. Your gift is tax deductible Thank you for your support, Doug Martin VP
