Hi All - This is a terrific painting from 1925 that was created for a Cosmopolitan Magazine story by Beatrice Grimshaw entitled, "The Coconut Pearl, Land Where Men Forget the Past". The artist was Dean Cornwell (1892-1960), known as "The Dean of Illustrators". He was a great influence to Norman Rockwell and a slue of others. He became famous for his work with magazines such as The Saturday Evening Post, Colliers, Cosmopolitan, Harpers Weekly and more. Cornwell's paintings also appear in museums throughout the country. Have a great weekend.

The below painting, Awaiting the First Ship, is by the great American artist, Thomas Moran. It is a beautiful version of a painting that is in the Gilcrease Museum that was featured in Americans All! highlighting historical paintings by immigrant artists. If you look to the right, you can see Columbus’s ship approaching the island of San Salvador, with the natives looking on in awe and bewilderment. As Mark Dolph, curator of history at the Gilcrease Museum stated, [Th...is painting] continues to ask us to reflect on the triumphs and tragedies that scene foreshadows. I have to wonder, was Moran using this world-changing event as a metaphor for his own experience as an immigrant, as someone coming into a new world, not knowing what was beyond the immediate horizon of his own life. Would it be a life of triumphor tragedy. Moran had come to the United States from England as a small boy. His family settled in Philadelphia where he apprenticed briefly to an engraver. In 1871, geologist F.C. Hayden petitioned Congress for a scientific survey of the Yellowstone area and invited Moran and photographer William Henry Jackson to accompany him. Moran’s paintings inspired in the American public a pride in the wild grandeur of the West. See more

The was painted by a great Missouri/Illinois artist named Frederick Oakes Sylvester (1869-1915). He was the art director at Principia College in Elsah, Illinois and painted this from his cottage there in 1908. He titled it, "When Evening Blends With Night" and you can see how he captures the mood of the view with subtle tones of color which is what he was known for. Sylvester was also a poet, known for a book he wrote entitled "The Great River". Have a wonderful weekend. #americanart #mississippiriver

Southern Charm: Stephen Scott Young Stephen Scott Young (American, b. 1957) The Meeting House, 1987... Watercolor on Paper 22 x 37 inches Signed and Dated Upper Right AVAILABLE FOR PURCHASE Born in Hawaii, Stephen Scott Young (b. 1957) spent most of his early life traveling around the United States. Eventually settling in Florida, where he attended the Ringling School of Art and Design. Young has devoted his career to depicting the southern United States and the Bahamas; in the early 1980's, Young made his first trip to the Bahamas where he discovered the crisp, bright light that has become the hallmark of his paintings today. Young is best known for his watercolor paintings. Inspired by the work of Thomas Eakins, Winslow Homer, and Andrew Wyeth, Young has done highly finished, detailed figurative subjects. Young's work is noted for his strikingly realist use of watercolor and eloquent simplicity of subject matter done in the American realist tradition. Young's copperplate etchings evidence a strident attention to detail and intricacy that suggest the influence of Rembrandt and Whistler. Though the images he creates are often nostalgic, his work deals with contemporary issues. Art historian Henry Adams wrote of Young in the late 1980s: "He is like one of those prospectors who has gone back to the tailings of an abandoned mine and where others saw only useless rocks found quantities of untapped, undiscovered gold." Young began working in watercolor in 1976, and took first prize at the American Artists national art competition in watercolors in 1985. Each masterwork by Stephen Scott Young is preceded by numerous drawings, sketches, studies, and preparatory paintings. The spirits of these works in progress often exceeds the finished subject and, when available, are eagerly sought by collectors. His work may currently be seen at national and international art galleries and is also on display at several major American museums including the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Butler Institute of American Art, and the Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art. He is featured in the permanent exhibits of the Brandywine River Museum in Chadds Ford, Pennsylvania, and the Greenville County Museum in South Carolina.
