We're dropping a vlog! Tune in for our new series on YouTube chronicling the every-day work of the officers at KCPD. Here's a quick teaser, and you can see the whole thing at https://youtu.be/db_W8TWk7io.
After Officers Rumney, Balachowski and Bartch responded to a call for service at Primitivo Garcia Elementary School, several of the girls at the school were excited to see all female police officers and asked for a picture with them.
We continue to celebrate these behind-the-scenes heroes during National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, though they deserve our appreciation every day. (We do not own the rights to this music.)
Happy birthday to us! Today is KCPD’s 147th birthday! On April 15, 1874, the Kansas City Missouri Police Department was established under the Missouri State Metropolitan Police Law, which allowed the governor to appoint the first Board of Police Commissioners, who in turn appointed Thomas Speers as the city’s first Chief of Police. Prior to this, area law enforcement was more of a Wild West marshal system.
REMINDER: Tomorrow is Drug Take-Back day! Police will be at locations throughout the City from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to collect unused prescription and over-the-counter medicine to prevent abuse and environmental contamination. Drugs can be handed over to police, no questions asked. All types of drugs will be accepted from individuals with the exception of needles, injectables, and aerosols/inhalers. Excess medication from businesses such as pharmacies, hospitals and physicians will not be accepted. The drugs will be incinerated. East Patrol officers stopped at Quik Trip and got to chatting with this man. He was on his way to a funeral and couldn't remember how to tie a tie, so one of the officers gave him a refresher.
It's fitting, as we celebrate National Public Safety Telecommunications Week, that one of our 911 call-takers quite likely prevented a shooting Sunday night. An armed man robbed a store in south Kansas City just before 9 p.m. After he walked out, a store employee grabbed her gun and ran after him. She was on the phone with 911 the whole time. She eventually caught up to and confronted the robbery suspect, and both pulled their guns out. The call-taker was able to convince the employee to put her gun away and return to the store. We don't want to think what possible violence could have ensued had the call-taker (who is relatively new) not calmly persuaded the employee to step away. She is one of the many dedicated professionals who answer your calls when you call 911 in Kansas City, Mo.
**MISSING JUVENILE/RUNAWAY** Joslyn Hill, w/f, 14 yrs old, 5’4, 135 lbs, brown hair, hazel eyes. Joslyn hasn’t been seen since 01/30 in the area of 50th and N Oak Trfwy. She has a beauty mark on her upper lip. She is believed to be in the area of Blue Springs, Mo. or Leavenworth, Ks. If located, please call 911 or the Missing Persons Unit 816-234-5136.
This is the kind of stuff that happens around this city every day: officers getting to know the people we serve. We're so happy one of our residents captured this and shared the video with us.
All KCPD patrol officers now have body worn cameras. This is a press conference in regard.
It's National Public Safety Telecommunicators Week! UPDATE: His family has been located! Thank you to everyone who shared. SEEKING PARENTS: This approximately 1-year-old boy was found wandering in the area of N.E. 51st and N. Garfield at about 11:20 a.m. today. If you know his parents/guardians or their whereabouts, please call 911 immediately.
Police encountered a child of preschool age on a call yesterday morning who needed to be taken into custody by the Children's Division. He was hungry, so the officers treated him to a McDonald's breakfast. He didn't have any shoes, either, so the East Patrol social service worker hooked the boy up with these tiny kicks from the clothes closet he maintains.
A single mother who has two children - who was already having trouble making ends meet - was a victim of an armed robbery last week. The mother was with her 10-year-old daughter when they were robbed at gunpoint. The suspect took her purse, which held what little spending money she had. The daughter's birthday just so happened to be the 6th of this month. Central Patrol Officer Guinn went to Costco on his time off to get a truckload of groceries, a $150 Aldi gift card, and ...his supervisor, Sergeant Chandler, purchased a bike and a new purse, as well as different toys for the kids. He asked for some cash donations from other officers, but pretty much used his own money. Officer Guinn, his sector, and the CPD social service worker went to deliver all of these items. The social worker also went to see what extra supports she needed. The daughter's eyes lit up when she saw the bike (hers had been stolen in a previous incident).
This month we are celebrating Black History Month. In 1874, William Davis & Lewis Tomkins, both African Americans, were among the first 25 officers of the Kansas City Missouri Police Department. This made KCPD an integrated police force from day one. In 1944, Rosie Mason was hired as the first African American female officer, although she did not become a commissioned officer until 1966. In 2011, Darryl Forte became the first African American chief of the KCPD. For more information about the history of KCPD visit our website, https://www.kcpd.org/about/history/. Officers pictured are: Officer L.A. Tillman and Officer Rosie Mason

UPDATE: Mr. Watts has been located and is safe. Thank you for all the help! SILVER ALERT: 71-year-old Claimon Watts was last seen 8 a.m. Sun., April 4, leaving his home near 81st and Troost. He was driving a maroon 2008 Mercury Sable with temporary tags. He's 6'0 tall and weighs about 220 lbs. He was wearing a blue and white hat, blue and white shirt and blue jeans. He has dementia and other health issues that require daily medication. Call 911 if you know where he is.
May you only hear about how gross it is out there on Facebook. Some tips: * Stay home - NB I-35 at 152 highway and WB I-70 at Little Blue Parkway are shut down due to hazardous road conditions. UPDATE: I-35 has reopened. Proceed with caution. * If you can't be warm at home, find the warming center nearest you: https://mogov.maps.arcgis.com/apps/webappviewer/index.html * If you see people in the cold who need assistance, call us at 911 to do a welfare check. ... * If you see animals out in the cold, call KC Pet Project's Animal Services Division at 311 (7 a.m. to 7 p.m.) or 816-683-1383 (7 p.m. to 7 a.m.) * Do NOT leave your car running unattended. We know it's cold, but sooooo many vehicles get stolen this way. Stay with your car as it warms up, or use a remote-start system that shuts off if someone tries to drive it without the fob. See more
Last year when the Chiefs won the Super Bowl, we received 163 reports of celebratory gunfire. Cheer, jump up and down, run outside and shout with glee, but PLEASE don't do anything to endanger yourself or others during/after the big game today. On New Year's Eve this year, more than a dozen homes in Kansas City were struck by gunfire. By pure luck, no one was hurt. Try to stop anyone you know considering shooting off a gun, and if you can't, call us. Remind them of Blair Shanahan Lane, the 11-year-old girl killed by celebratory gunfire in 2011. She was her mother's only child. http://northeastnews.net//police-gun-safety-advocates-war/?
Happy tails to K9 Bennett, who retired yesterday after 8+ years of service sniffing out drugs. In his career, he's found nearly 85 lbs. of meth, 32 lbs. of cocaine, 1.4 lbs. of heroin, 1.1 gallons of PCP and more than $436,000 in cash. He'll spend retirement in the lap of leisure at the home of his detective handler. Thank you for the retirement treats, Pup Treats KC!
Upon hearing two women had jumped from their third story apartment to escape fire, officers responded to the local hospital where the women were being treated. They learned the women had thrown their dog, Mocha, to safety but she ran off. It became the officers' mission to find her. While back at the scene of the fire, the officers spotted Mocha wandering in a nearby parking lot. They were able to rescue the dog and took Mocha to be reunited with the women who were so appreciative.
South Patrol, our Explorers and many other organizations came together to hand out food, coats, blankets, hats and gifts to hundreds of families just before Christmas last week at their Because We Care Event.
Thank you so much to Thelma's Kitchen for sharing 150 box lunches with us at our Central Patrol Division today. We are so thankful for our great neighbors who work hard to make KC a better place; one box lunch at a time. #EatWell #DoGood #RevealStrength www.thelmasboxlunch.org
What an amazing letter from one of the families served by yesterday's Shop with a Cop from Kcfop Lodge! "My name is ShaNecka Jones. I am a 38 year old single mother working hard to provide for my nine children. There have been times when I was not sure where our next meal would come from. We went through a very intense hard time in 2018: we were homeless for 9 months. Living in our truck, getting dressed on the side of the road with no help or assistance from anywhere. Wor...king hard and by the grace of God, we are no longer in that situation. "My children range from 17-4 years old, they work just as hard as I do, very helpful, respectful and appreciative. It’s often hard to live from paycheck to paycheck, especially when there are daily needs that have to be provided, I am thankful I am sending my first born off to college soon and we are grateful for that blessing. "The blessings we have despite the shortcomings we have endured, are much greater! "I was beyond delighted when Ms. Tamara from the Social work program contacted me. I was introduced to Ms. Tamara as I was in a bad situation I turned positive earlier in the year. When I was advised my family had been chosen for a blessing for Christmas from KCPD I was speechless. I do not receive any help or assistance from anywhere. There aren’t any words that could be expressed verbally to show my gratitude! "Thank you all for choosing my children, they were excited as we were writing their wish list, kids are a joy I know! To see there smiles will be amazing. "The struggle/responsibility is all mine for my 9 children I birthed. To have people out there who genuinely care out here and has your best interest is delightful. We are very appreciative for the things you all were able to provide, giving this is the holiday season. I am grateful for the time, money and thought put in to the gifts bought. I wish you all joy and happiness for your families through these difficult times in the world. I am not sure where their X-Mas would have come from this year, as we are currently looking for a new house to reside in. "I want to thank you all on behalf my children and I we appreciate your giving hearts, I hope those of you who have children, your children and families will be as happy as you all helped to make my children. Enjoy your holidays! "May God Bless you, Merry Christmas (Stay safe!) Sincerely ShaNecka (The Jones Crew)!"
While many around our city were celebrating Christmas morning, Taking it to the Streets was busy cooking our on-duty officers a full holiday meal. KCPD chaplains then delivered the food to all our patrol divisions. We are so thankful for all the organizations and the civilian employees and spouses who brought and served food to our officers on Christmas Day. There was so much food at East Patrol, they were able to donate it to City Union Mission. Thank you!
We were happy to help train the new Animal Services officers at KC Pet Project!
The Kcfop Lodge couldn't do their regular Shop with a Cop event this year due to COVID, so officers and social service workers throughout the department will be delivering the toys and gifts to identified families. Pick-up was today at the FOP Lodge.

Thousands of people came to our trunk-or-treat events and the community events in which we participated all over Kansas City. It was so fun to see all the cool costumes and share candy. There are six different events pictured here. (And sorry to those who came later to our Shoal Creek trunk-or-treat which was so much more popular than we anticipated that we ran out of candy! We promise we'll get more next year!) Also, the pumpkin treat buckets you'll see in some of the pictures were donated by the City of Kansas City, Mo. Government's Solid Waste Services Division.
Your annual reminder: Lusty deer are currently abounding on area roadways and won't let your car get in the way of their quest for lovin. Be alert.
We've joined with dozens of faith leaders to rally for peace in today's election and the days that follow.
