For all who know me, you know that I am going through the older parent thing with my Mom. This may help you! Tips to help Parents age in place... As our parents get older, safety plays a bigger role in their lives and ours. Grab bars and fall-alert buttons are important but today there’s an array of sophisticated products that can help seniors age in place. Personal Emergency Response Systems or PERS. Traditional fall-alerts utilize a button attached to a pendant or wrist bracelet. When pressed, the button activates a telephone that auto dials a central monitoring station that summons help. But what if the user forgets to wear the device or is too forgetful or confused to push the button? The new PERS technology detects the difference between falling and bending or stooping down to pick something up and appropriately triggers an automatic response for medical help. These new devices are chest straps, worn under clothing similar to a heart monitor. Medication dispensers that notify a caregiver if a dosage is missed. Taking prescribed medicine in a timely manner is a problem for many seniors but is often a requirement of independent living. One of the latest medication management tools is a countertop dispenser that’s about the size of a blender. The device is loaded with enough meds for several days and coded to deliver the right amount of medication at the appropriate times. The manufacturer of the dispenser is supplied with the patient’s dosing schedule. Many models notify a caregiver by phone, email or text if a dosage is missed. Shoes with embedded GPS to track seniors. The system is implanted in the heel of an otherwise normal shoe, allows caregivers to set up alerts if a person strays outside of a predefined area and lets them monitor the wearer. Home a safe haven Do your parents prefer to stay at home and remain independent? If so, you may want to discuss this option with their primary care provider as the best choice often depends on their medical condition as well as their budget and personal preferences. But if your parents choose to stay at home there are many devices available today to help make that choice easier to sustain

Document Your Possessions in 3 Easy Steps Posted: 07 Jan 2013 05:01 PM PST It’s that time of year again. As the new year begins and you have just received a new flat screen for the holidays, it’s time to once again document your possessions for insurance purposes. I have mentioned the following tips before. And yes, this post goes along the same lines as the reviewing your insurance policies post. It’s always good to start the year off fresh with the most up-to-date informat...ion on your possessions and coverage, that way you will always be prepared. The FBI reports that 9.3 million property crimes were committed in 2009. That’s over 3,000 burglarized homes for every 100,000. Perhaps you’ve been told to document your possessions in case of burglary or natural disaster, but what is the best way to go about it? Essentially, the best way to document your possessions is by video. You may ask, Why video as opposed to a written list with receipts? The reason is that a receipt shows that you once purchased something but does not prove that you still have it. A time-stamped video taken once a year (or prior to seasonal conditions like wildfire season) will show proof and substantiate your claim. Below are three easy steps to document your possessions by video: Go from room to room in the interior of your home and take video of all your possessions. Be sure to zoom in on item bar codes and serial numbers and make sure you have a time stamp on your video. Don’t worry about narrating the value of each item; there are insurance pricing specialists that evaluate pricing costs. In addition to documenting the interior of your home, take pictures or video of the exterior, including the landscaping. Documenting your landscaping is important because if you have a fire, you may not remember what tree went where. Be sure to back up the video and put a copy in a safety deposit box or give a copy to a relative who lives at a different residence. Note that any receipts you may still have may be helpful to a pricing specialist. If you no longer have receipts then try to have the most specific descriptions you can. For example, you bought that couch at such-and-such a store and it was this style for approximately $5,000. Taking video of your possessions may take a little time, but in the long run you’ll have proper documentation and your claims process can go a little more smoothly.

Twas' 11 days before Christmas, around 9:38 when 20 beautiful children stormed through Heaven's gate. Their smiles were contagious, their laughter filled the air. They could hardly believe all the beauty they saw there. They were filled with such joy, ... they didn't know what to say. They remembered nothing of what had happened earlier that day. "Where are we?" asked a little girl, as quiet as a mouse. "This is heaven." declared a small boy. "We're spending Christmas at God's house." When what to their wondering eyes did appear, but Jesus, their Savior, the children gathered near. He looked at them and smiled, and they smiled just the same. Then He opened His arms and He called them by name. And in that moment was joy, that only heaven can bring, those children all flew into the arms of their King. And as they lingered in the warmth of His embrace, one small girl turned and looked at Jesus' face. And as if He could read all the questions she had he gently whispered to her, "I'll take care of mom and dad." Then He looked down on earth, the world far below he saw all of the hurt, the sorrow, and woe. Then He closed His eyes and He outstretched His hand, "Let My power and presence re-enter this land!" "May this country be delivered from the hands of fools" "I'm taking back my nation. I'm taking back my schools!" Then He and the children stood up without a sound. "Come now my children, let me show you around." Excitement filled the space, some skipped and some ran. All displaying enthusiasm that only a small child can. And I heard Him proclaim as He walked out of sight, "in the midst of this darkness, I AM STILL THE LIGHT." See more

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Defensive Driving Tips to Avoid Hitting a Deer Posted: 06 Nov 2012 02:11 PM PST... The Insurance Information Institute gives the following information and advice on defensive driving tips to avoid hitting a deer. The exploding deer population has led to a continuing increase in deer-car collisions and this trend will only increase as the deer population grows and urban habitats continue to encroach upon rural environments. The institute notes that the average cost per insurance claim for collision damage is $2,800, with costs varying depending on the type of vehicle and severity of damage. And, when you factor in auto claims involving bodily injury, the average rises to $10,000. The institute gives the following defensive driving tips to avoid hitting a deer: Be especially attentive from sunset to midnight and during the hours shortly before and after sunrise. These are the highest risk times for deer-vehicle collisions. Drive with caution when moving through deer-crossing zones, in areas known to have a large deer population and in areas where roads divide agricultural fields from forestland. Deer seldom run alone. If you see one deer, others may be nearby. When driving at night, use high beam headlights when there is no oncoming traffic. The high beams will better illuminate the eyes of deer on or near the roadway. Slow down and blow your horn with one long blast to frighten the deer away. Brake firmly when you notice a deer in or near your path, but stay in your lane. Many serious crashes occur when drivers swerve to avoid a deer and hit another vehicle or lose control of their cars. Always wear your seat belt. Most people injured in car/deer crashes were not wearing their seat belt. Do not rely on devices such as deer whistles, deer fences and reflectors to deter deer. These devices have not been proven to reduce deer-vehicle collisions. And, if you do hit a deer, do not touch it. A frightened and wounded deer can hurt you or further injure itself. The best procedure is to get your car off the road, if possible, call the police and then call your Farmers Agent to report any damage to your car. Photo credit: Automotive.com
