Iconium firefighters met at station 1 on Tuesday evening for a training session. The chief and assistant chief wanted to make sure everyone knows where gear is on the engine. They took everything out of Engine 1, cleaned the compartments, re-rolled the hoses, and repacked all the gear.
Training continues at the Iconium Fire Protection District. Some pumper training and small engine maintenance was on the agenda.
Small natural cover fired handled quickly and efficiently. VFF's J. Smart, Price, Schmidt, Schutz, Besserman, and Tucker responded. Great work team!
Supporters of the Iconium Fire District contributed about $1,700 so far this year to the department through a bucket next to the cash register at Scott’s Iconium General Store. These funds supplement the approximately $35,000 from property taxes that the district receives annually. These contributions are especially important this year since district volunteers were not able to collect voluntary tolls on Visitors Sundays at the H. Roe Bartle Scout Reservation because of... the pandemic. Those tolls collected an average of $9,200 each of the past three summers. Also, for the same reason, the annual Iconium Picnic was not held in September; that event generated about $700 for the district in 2019. The Board of Directors continues to upgrade firefighting equipment as it has funds. It bought and outfitted a used pickup this summer for about $24,000 for a new Brush Fire Truck. It replaces an older Brush Fire Truck with mechanical problems that outlived its usefulness. The Board used a combination of current-year revenues and savings to pay for the new Brush Fire Truck. Anyone who wants to learn more about the operations of the district, or who might be interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter, is welcome to attend monthly board meetings. They’re at 7:00 on the second Wednesday night of each month at Fire Station 1 just north of Iconium.

Thank you, Iconium Fire District supporters! At the Iconium community potluck picnic on Sept. 28, you contributed $671 to support your fire department. That includes $371 stuffed into the fire boots and $300 from the raffle of a historic bottle of Kansas City Chiefs wine. The money will help us provide pants, coats, helmets, gloves and other equipment for three new volunteer firefighters who have signed up in the past few months. Also, don't forget that we're having a Fire S...afety Open House and free supper on Saturday, Oct 12, at Fire Station 1, Highway C at Highway ZZ just north of Iconium. The event starts at 4 with fire safety demonstrations and programs; the meal starts at 5:30; we'll have drawings for door prizes after we eat. You'll also have a chance to sign up for free fire prevention inspections of your home and property. Tina Price and Don Philpott and others have spent a lot of time planning this Open House and we hope many people will stop by.
