Helpful tax tips and updates: Many people have questioned waiting for their W-2, if they have their final paystub. It is a violation of IRS regulations for a preparer to file your return without the W-2. We can use a paystub as a placeholder until you have the W-2, and a paystub may be used under certain conditions later in the season, but an amended return will be required with it. If you file without the W-2, your return will likely be held up while the IRS validates the in...formation. They do not receive paychecks, but they do receive W-2s, so unless filing substitute earnings, you must file only with the W-2, or your information may not pass the IRS matching file, causing you delays and headaches. This is the final year of the individual insurance mandate. Please make sure you’ve got your 1095 form(s) - 1095-A for exchange insurance, 1095-B and/or 1095-C for employer provided insurance - when you file. It gets better next year The PATH Act is still in play. Returns with certain refundable credits are held until after Feb. 15 in order to allow W-2s and 1099s to load to the IRS system. A return must be complete when submitted - the IRS can’t separate out the part that is held from the part that isn’t. While the IRS furlough is over, they are still in the process of staffing and training their seasonal workers. There are still some anticipated delays in customer service and return processing as they come back on line from their month out of action. An additional furlough during tax season is looming in the near future, barring a resolution to the issues that caused the first furlough. This may impact IRS customer service, and prior year processing (which can then affect current year processing). And finally, welcome back, IRS staff! We look forward to the annual head-to-head action on the field this season, as we represent our clients now that the furlough is temporarily over. Hartman Tax Service looks forward to helping clients navigate every tax season, especially this year, with so many large changes. Give us a call! This is what we’ve trained for, for our entire lives! Hi everyone! So I've been holding off on posting, hoping to have better tax season news. Unfortunately, the shutdown continues, so here's what we have to work with: Opening day for processing returns is Monday 1/28. The IRS will be accepting e-filed returns, and as always, they expect timely payments on any open payment plans. The IRS recalled 46,000 employees to process returns, but their union is advising that thousands of those recalled are either seeking hardship exemptio...ns or will participate in coordinated "sick out protests" due to no paychecks. There will be very limited phone support, and all walk-in centers will remain closed. Expect delays in processing, and refunds. This is a really good year to make your tax preparation and filing someone else's problem. We're here for you! We are offering bank products and refund anticipation loans that are much less costly than payday loans. The PATH Act delays processing of certain returns until after February 15, and processing delays beyond that are expected. Coupled with no government paychecks, please consider us a viable option to payday loans. The new QBI deduction for small businesses is a mess. There is still guidance to be issued by the IRS on this topic and others, that is delayed by the shutdown. While there are many issues at play, we are looking forward to yet another beautifully hectic tax year, and are looking forward to visiting with old friends. Give us a call. We're setting preparation and filing appointments, during days, evenings, and weekends through April 15! Cameron Hartman Hartman Tax Service (314) 620-6823

It was like Groundhog Day. I woke up, and it was Tax Day... again! All Hartman Tax Service returns that were e-filed have been received and acknowledged by the IRS and applicable state agencies. Now, let’s see what happens when I wake up tomorrow. Will it be furry Phil again, or Andie MacDowell?

The IRS has extended the 2017 filing season to midnight on Wednesday, April 18 due to the system glitch that has caused processing delays since mid-day Tuesday. Yup. One. More. Day. Hartman Tax Service has been diligently working through the glitch to ensure that your return is in process. You do not need to take further action if your return has been signed and readied. We’ll get them in there for you, even if we have to hand deliver them. Road trip!!!
