Following guidance from the Center for Disease Control and recommendations from state and local public health authorities in consultation with NPS Public Health Service Officers, at Harry S Truman National Historic Site the park’s visitor center, the Truman Home, and in-person programs are closed/cancelled until further notice. The park grounds at the Truman Farm in Grandview will remain open from dawn until dusk. Updates will be posted to the park website (https://www.nps.gov/aboutus/news/public-health-update.htm) and social media channels.#COVID19 #coronavirus
His was a unique path to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue. A uniquely American path. Son of a livestock trader...bright student and voracious reader....a good farmer...an exceptional Army officer... a haberdasher...a local politician...a United States Senator...a reluctant Vice President....and 76 years ago tonight the weight of the world was in his shoulders. He faced it head on, together with his life partner Bess and cherished daughter Margaret at his side. #Missouri200 #harrytruman
Seventy-six years ago today.... Statement by the President After Taking the Oath of Office April 12, 1945... THE WORLD may be sure that we will prosecute the war on both fronts, east and west, with all the vigor we possess to a successful conclusion. NOTE: The oath of office was administered by Chief Justice Harlan F. Stone at 7:09 p.m. in the Cabinet Room at the White House. Shortly thereafter the President announced through an assistant that the United Nations Conference would be held in San Francisco on April 25 as President Roosevelt had directed. The foregoing statement was released at 8:10 p.m. #Missouri200
From our (your!) collection, a lovely portrait of a lovely lady. This black and white charcoal print of First Lady Bess Wallace Truman is signed by the artist, Bob Hoke and was found in one of the wooden crates used to bring the Trumans’ goods and chattels back to Independence in 1953.
Just to cover our bases...We thought you might enjoy a photograph of President Harry Truman at a ball game. This photograph was originally on a stereoview card, but we won't ask you to cross your eyes to look at it. Note the caption! The Library of Congress lists this photograph as possibly being from 1945.
We hope this post flows well...we thought you might like to see a typical water bill for 219 North Delaware Street in the summer of 1947. This is one of thousands of documents that have been digitized by the Truman Library, and a document that gives us more of an insight into the human history of 219 North Delaware Street...an example of how different government agencies work together to tell the complete Truman story.
A post for our steak-holders....perhaps you would like an insight into one of the bills from 219 North Delaware Street, specifically the grocery bill. This is from the Bess Truman papers at the incredible Harry S. Truman Presidential Library and Museum. Re-posted for better image.
