THE GIFT OF SALTINESS December 25, 2020 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by humans. Matthew 5:13... As I write, my son is on day 12 of his mandatory 14-day quarantine. We are all at the limit. We have hit the wall, so to speak. On this bright November morning, we approached his homeschool lessons with little appetite for learning. Our focus has been on ‘what are we missing out on and what is missing from our lives?’ Major paused from his Chromebook and looked me right in the face and asked ‘How can I hear God? I don’t know if I’m hearing God lately.’ These are the moments we long for as parentsmoments of frankness, candid questions, and vulnerability. These are the moments of life mingled with the ordinary. As a preacher mom, I’m never as prepared as one would assume a preacher momma would be for the ‘answer’ to the inquisitive 11-year old’s question. How can I hear God? How can you hear God? How does anyone hear God? My first impulsive reply was this: I hear God when I see you love another person. Second, I hear God when you laugh and express real joy. Jack chimed in that he hears God talk to him in his dreams. We, as a family, hear God when we talk to God in prayers. We hear God in the cry of a baby and in the wind. Lately, as Major was quick to say, God must be doing a LOT of talking because of the strong wind. Our last 9 months we have spent much time focusing on what we are missing. Perhaps the lens should be on what is not temporary but permanent. God came to earth to season us up not for one ‘season’ but for all time. God came down at Christmas to shake us up like a snowman salt shaker on our kitchen table. How do you find your saltiness and ignite your flavoring again? We find our saltiness is enhanced when we are ‘together’ and telling stories of hope. We find our saltiness is enriched when we keep traditions (a tree, an advent calendar, ringing bells at the Salvation Army) meaningful together. How’s your saltiness this Christmas morning? The Invitation of Christmas is for each of us to keep the taste of Jesus alive: the sweetness, the grace, the saltiness of discipleship. Christmas is not temporary. Christ’s rebirth is undeniably permanent in US and through US. Go Forth in this day in joy, knowing that in the goodness of God you were born, by his mercy you have been kept all day long. As a sign of his everlasting grace you have been redeemed for a purpose. So, go now and live in the midst of God’s purpose for your life. And as you go, may the Lord bless you and keep you, may the Lord make His face to shine upon you, and give you peace, this day and forever more. Christmas Blessings for all! Pastor Angela Madden
