If you own land and are unsure of where the boundaries or corners are, it is a good idea to get a survey completed as a precaution, he said. Most landowners are not worried about boundaries until something happens. Ninety-nine percent of the time, the cost of having a survey conducted is cheaper than a lawsuit or the cost of having to move a structure.

Showing my granddaughter a 1/4 section stone in the center of a county road at the SW corner of what used to be my grandpa’s farm. I was shown this stone corner by my grandpa over 50 years ago when I was her age. I’ve used this stone in several surveys... "Jens Peder Kristensen is the CEO of Denmark-based TinyMobileRobots. The company's marquee product, the TinySurveyor, is predictably small. But the technology has the potential to make a big impact in land surveying." "A skill shortage of land surveyors is one of many challenges facing Australia that encourages the country to push the boundaries of autonomous technology." says Waters. Before you tell the neighborhood, and potentially the courts, about your grievance, make sure you really know the particulars. One person’s property boundaries might be drawn slightly differently than the other’s because they each used different surveyors, leaving both of them certain of ownership when nothing is certain at all. One person might have been deeded the property by a previous owner who didn’t inform the new owner at the time of sale. There might be a disagreement as to an easement, which is a legal permission for a neighbor to use the land without ever obtaining ownership of it.

A survey showing setbacks and other structures and physical characteristics of a parcel of land is a valuable document that can provide assurance of what a landowner actually has, to ensure ownership and enjoyment of the property.

FGS Surveyors is proud to announce it has added another state certification to its extensive list, expanding the coverage area across 21 states. South Dakota licensure has been acquired by Horace Wayne Walker, Jr., FGS’s CEO. With offices in South-Central Missouri and the Florida Panhandle, the four Professional Licensed Surveyors and one certified Hydrographer that make up FGS have provided a full range of surveying services across the U.S. for more than three decades. This additional license is part of FGS's continued focus on expansion of its services and geographic range across the U.S., this being FGS's third new license in the three years since creation.

"Over the past several decades, several states have increased the educational requirements for becoming a licensed surveyor. Currently, the number of states that require a minimum of an associate degree or higher is 25. More states are looking to follow that lead and increase their requirement. However, some states that already have these rules are looking to repeal the statutes in order to lower the bar for entry as a licensed surveyor. Going forward, educational opportuniti...es for surveying will be needed as different aspects of the profession require different expertise. Keeping both existing and new sources of surveying curriculum is key to the success of our profession in replenishing our ranks. While there are differing opinions to a degree requirement, most will agree that education in any form is the only way to keep surveyors regarded as professionals." See more

https://www.pobonline.com/art/98228-a-shortage-of-surveyors There are several factors that contribute to the less-than-healthy stream of incoming surveyors. One of them is technology. 20 years ago, a typical survey crew consisted of 3-4 people, the assistants to the actual surveyor had the opportunity to gain field experience, which allowed them to rise through the ranks and ultimately become licensed themselves. With the advancement of technology, in many cases, that crew o...f four has been reduced to one. You’ve got a person who’s using robotics, so you significantly reduce the opportunity for someone else to gain field experience and advance in their own career. Another detriment is the evolution of educational expectations for surveyors. Many state boards now requiring a 4-year degree, and on top of that, a 4 year apprenticeship-type situation, working under an already-licensed professional. See more
