"Meet the Doctor" It’s time to Meet the Doctor with our very own, Dr. Janae Kadlec. We’ve gotten to know all our doctors a little better and have enjoyed doing so. The other doctors had such interesting things to say about what they wanted to be when they grew up that I thought it would be fun to ask her the same question. She had so many interests growing up that all I can say is I’m glad she chose eye care! This was difficult to narrow down because I had contemplated se...veral different careers as a child. I’ve wanted to be an airline pilot, a teacher, a doctor, a champion barrel racer, and even a detective. I loved to read and often dreamed of becoming a super sleuth like Nancy Drew in the mystery novels I adored while growing up. Being raised by parents who were both teachers, I was exposed to many unique opportunities to explore and learn about the world around me. I suppose that was a big part of the reason I wanted to be a teacher. I was the oldest of four and would often pretend to be their teacher, assigning them lots of homework. Obviously, my siblings didn’t care for that too much but the idea of being a teacher did stick with me, allowing me to earn extra money as a substitute teacher while on breaks during my college years. It helped me to quickly develop an appreciation for the hard work that goes into being an educator. After exploring several other potential careers, ruling out some of the already mentioned interests, my sophomore year of high school is when I found my way to optometry. It seemed like such a rewarding field, especially since I still remember how impactful it was when I got my first pair of glasses in the sixth grade. The details that jumped out at me were incredible! To be able to improve another person’s quality of life by helping them see their world more clearly, what a gift! I can incorporate my love for teaching by educating patients on the importance of keeping their eyes healthy. I also feel there are situations in which I get to utilize my desire for being a detective by having to determine the cause of various problems that a patient may be experiencing with their vision or eye health. It is fun to learn new and interesting things from patients and to encourage others who may want to learn more about eye care. Optometry has been a very rewarding profession. Pictures below are Dr. Kadlec as a child reading to a younger sibling and the other was while she was in her last year of Optometry school.
