Thoughts from Sheriff Keesaman: Colossians 4:6 Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. These words of wisdom can certainly be applied to many of us as go about our daily walk of life, but they seem especially suited for our brave men and women in the field of dispatch. At DeKalb County, we have our own dispatch staff that is home to 6 full time dispatchers. These 6 women do a remarkable job of sorting through t...he chaos and directing the Sheriff’s Office, multiple fire agencies, and EMS/Ambulance crews where they need to go. These women have a gift at communicating with the public, and I am honored to have them serve our community with the level of professionalism and integrity they show. I am also humbled and amazed at how they handle many of the high stress calls that they receive during their shifts. Our dispatchers know how to talk with concerned citizens, getting crucial information from them in order to get the right people to the right place. Often, 911 calls involve people dealing with the worst day of their lives, and it always amazes me how our dispatchers can get critical information amidst the emotions and panic of those calls. What is even more incredible is the level of compassion they all show for those people during their time of conflict, and I have witnessed this compassion and genuine care continue long after the phone call has ended. Some days I swear our dispatchers have 6 arms and 8 ears because of the way they can multitask and dispatch several agencies at the same time. I also am convinced they have a double portion of heart, due to their compassion and dedication to the people of our community. Our dispatchers have to be ready to answer some truly off the wall questions throughout their shifts, and their quick wit and seasoned responses are timely and accurate. Our dispatchers know people do not call them to thank them for their service, or see how they are doing, and they understand that is part of their mission. Words do no justice to the amount of respect and gratefulness I have towards our great dispatch personal! I especially want to take a moment to offer both congratulations, and an un-measurable thank you to Sherri Day, our long time night dispatch supervisor. Sherri has been dispatching for many years, and has served DeKalb County as dispatcher for over 10 years. Sherri has recently retired, and I congratulate her on her retirement. We will all miss her here at the office, and I am happy to have had the opportunity to have worked with her. There were many high risk/dangerous situations that occurred during her dispatch shifts, and I have no doubt her work during those calls helped make for the positive outcome on many of them. Thank you Sherri for your dedication and hard work! Thank you to the DeKalb County Dispatchers for all you do! May God bless DeKalb County and the people who live in it! See more
