A contempt motion is a motion filed in family court when the other parent doesn’t obey a court order. The court order is most often based upon the agreement of the parties but sometimes is based upon solely a prior order entered by the judge. Visit our blog to learn more!

What does the COVID-19 Stay at Home Order mean for Custody Exchanges? On March 24, 2020, both the City of Columbia and County of Boone announced Stay at Home Orders which require people to remain in their homes whenever possible for the next thirty (30) days in an effort to slow the spread of COVID-19. There are exceptions for essential activities such as drive-through restaurants, gas stations, pharmacies, banks, and grocery stores. What does this mean for exchanging childr...en during this time? One of the "essential" activities under the Stay at Home Order is any activity that is "essential for a parent with legal custody to transfer physical custody of a child." This means you can and should continue to follow all court orders with respect to exchanging children. Not only should you, you MUST follow court orders with respect to exchanging your children. If you are a parent who has been denied custody or visitation and you have not been exposed to someone with COVID-19, please call us to help with enforcing your custody order. We are accepting consultations through Skype, Zoom, or phone call. You can schedule a consultation directly on our website today. #COVID19 #custody

Are you at home and not feeling safe with your significant other? If you live in Missouri and fear for your physical safety, you can get a Judge to issue a restraining order that forbids that person from contacting you or coming near your home, work, or school. These orders are being entered despite closures related to COVID-19. You can get a restraining order even if you are not married to your significant other. A restraining order stops the abuser from communicating with y...ou in any way, including following you, speaking in person, phone call, text message, or mail. For more information, please give us a call today or schedule a phone or video chat appointment directly on our website. Please also review our blog post regarding filing orders of protection. https://www.columbiafamilylawgroup.com//how-to-file-an-ad/ #domesticviolence #intimatepartnerviolence #COVID19

If you are like many Missourians right now, you may be working from home and finding yourself with more time on your hands than normal. Perhaps you're that person who needs to get divorced, but you haven't had time to deal with it yet. Maybe you just need some advice on what divorce, custody, or child support modification would look like but scheduling a consultation with a lawyer is tricky because of your work schedule. While access to contested court dockets is non-existe...nt right now, that doesn't mean you can't proceed with filing your case, particularly if an agreement can be reached. This is also a good time to find out what your rights are. Wondering how to meet with a lawyer right now? We offer phone conferences, Zoom meetings, and Skype calls. We'll be happy to go over all of your questions and explain the process to you. We want you to know that moving on in a time of crisis is still possible. For more help or to just find out what your rights are, please contact our office or schedule online on our website.
