Law Enforcement Sales Tax On the April 6th ballot, there will be an option for a law enforcement sales tax. This is a local sales tax and will not cause an inc...rease in property tax. The proceeds would not be funneled out of county, however, would be used locally to benefit Mercer County citizens. The proposed tax would be one half cent per one-hundred dollars spent in the county. Over the next few month’s we will be answering questions and explaining the benefits to the county should this pass. It is estimated that the proposed sales tax would generate an additional $145,000 annually. This income would be used to purchase and maintain much needed law enforcement equipment as well as assist with the operating costs of the Sheriff’s Office. For example, approximately $219,000 was taken out of the counties general revenue account this year to assist with the operating costs of the Sheriff’s Office. This has been happening for years including under the last administration. The ballot language would read as follows: Shall the County Commission of Mercer County, Missouri, be authorized pursuant to Sec. 67.582 RSMo to impose an ADDITIONAL county-wide sales tax of one-half (1/2%) of one percent for the purposes of providing law enforcement services? With the option of voting yes or no. In the upcoming weeks we will be posting further information on the proposal. We will be hosting a Facebook live event as well to speak further about the benefits of this proposal. If you have any questions feel free to contact the Sheriff’s Office. See more

The following email was received by USDI: The state of Texas has declared a state of emergency for all 254 counties. The Winter storm across Texas is knocking out power across the State. Evergy, the power company serving the Kansas City area and other areas has instituted rolling blackouts and other power companies are doing the same. Natural gas processing plants are losing power which in turn reduces the amount of natural gas available to pipelines serving the ENTIRE MIDWE...ST. Prices will remain at extremely high levels for the next few days and literally could be 100 300 times the normal price or more! The natural gas system across the Midwest will continue to see supply cuts. It is impossible at this point to determine where the future gas production losses will occur. Please continue to do everything you can to limit usage. We recommend that thermostats should be set BELOW 68 degrees. This is impacting entire Midwest and with blizzard like conditions in multiple states we will continue to see power loss and production loss. Please do EVERYTHING you can to reduce natural gas consumption immediately. We just have to make it through the next few days. This is an unprecedented event NEVER seen before in the natural gas business. THIS NOTICE IS APPLICABLE THROUGH SUNDAY MORNING AND COULD BE EXTENDED. For those who have already made adjustments, you are making a difference. Keep up the good work. See more

Dear Citizens of Mercer: Due to Artic Temps we are under an energy emergency, both Gas and Electric. We have been informed that Grundy will begin rolling outages of at least 30 minutes in our area and the gas grid we buy from needs us to lower our thermostats to the lowest we can be okay in. Please check on your elderly neighbors that they are okay during this time!! Also the landfill that Rapid Removal uses as been closed and they are taking it day by day when they can pick up trash. So on Saturday please put your trash out early and hopefully they will be able to get it. Thank you for all your help!! City of Mercer
