Friends and bread-fiends alike, we've been pretty quiet over the last couple of months as we're going through our transition. Here's some thoughts: 1) It's come to our attention recently that our phone hasn't been receiving calls. The issue is now resolved, sorry about the confusion! 2) We should be expanding distribution to a few new grocers over the next month or so if all goes according to plan. Ideally, this will include some doughs that have been out of the rotation rece...ntly. 3) We'll no longer be present at the Schlafly farmers' market in Maplewood for the forseeable future. We'll be trying different markets soon and will let you know when we decide! 4) Don't refrigerate bread! It makes it stale tremendously faster. We suggest slicing the loaf in half and freezing one half if you don't think it'll be eaten within 5 days or so. In fact, when bread is frozen fresh, it'll be of the same quality after thawed to everyone but molecular biologists. 5) Enjoy this beautiful day!

We decided Thursday to switch our phone number from a landline phone to a mobile phone, and the phone company has disconnected our landline without activating the mobile phone. So, unfortunately, we do not have a phone available right now, and likewise cannot process cards until the phone company corrects the mistake. Howdy all. There have been a handful of people this week that have mentioned that they thought we were closed when they've come in. WE'RE NOT CLOSED. However, we are almost certainly leaving this space at the end of the month. That being said, Black Bear will be fine; we will still bake and deliver to our wholesale accounts, as well as maintain a farmer's market presence *at least* (the only change is that we may temporarily not have a storefront after October). More details will be shared in the coming weeks, but until then, you can still come in and get the goodies you love, same as always!

Friends, Best of Missouri is coming up Oct. 2-4. It's the most important event for us in the entire year, and we're severly understaffed. It would be tremendously helpful if anyone could commit to even just an hour in late Sept/early October to help us with things like general sanitation tasks (washing dishes, sweeping/mopping, etc.) so that we can focus on making those delicious breads and treats you know so well. We can only afford to pay $5 an hour (which is what we'll be paying ourselves as well), but again, it would be a tremendous help and be tremendously appreciated if you have the time. NEED A LITTLE HELP FROM OUR FRIENDS: Black Bear Co-op's gofundme page! We're excited to see you here because with your help, we hope to finish our transition into an independent worker-owned co-op.... In the last few months, Black Bear Co-op has been steadily growing. We have doubled some of our existing orders, and we've recently taken on several new accounts. We are at the point where we have developed a reputation for high quality, consistently tasty bread and treats, and we are looking to grow even further. Our 99 year old sourdough starter is famous throughout St. Louis, and in our selection of organic, locally sourced, hand-made products we have something for everyone. We are continuing our tradition of donating extra bread to people who are hungry, both in our storefront and through various churches and other organizations. We also have been contributing to local activist organizations, both through bread donations for fundraisers and other events, and by holding events in our storefront including meetings, art exhibits, etc. Black Bear Co-op is steadily becoming a vibrant organization known for high quality products and socially and environmentally responsible business practices. Right now, we feel we are at a transition point where, with a little bit of financial help, we will be able to kick our activities into high gear. As you may know, about two years ago Black Bear reincorporated with the State of Missouri as a worker-owned co-op, and in the process faced some challenges that coupled with some historical debt nearly bankrupted us. We have managed to weather the storm, and are now growing once again. However, we are still facing some lingering debt, and with your help, we're hoping to wipe out this debt once and for all. In the last two years, we have manged to take care of about 75% of our original debt. In addition, Black Bear has become a leaner operation, doing about the same amount of business with about 1/3 of our previous staff. However, our lingering debt is making it extremely difficult to continue our transition. Thus, we have started this gofundme page to try to eliminate it once and for all. We have about $14,000 of debt total, but we're starting by asking for $5,000 because that alone will help us make significant progress toward being financially independent once more.
