A working knowledge of federal procurement standards and their application to non-federal awards is essential for ethical post-award implementation and management. When your organization establishes all of its procurement policies around federal guidelines, you can rest assured that the strongest ethical standard is met. Volunteers are the lifeblood of nonprofit organizations, but the pandemic has created major barriers to participation, especially for older people, who face a higher risk of serious illness or death if they contract the coronavirus. As a result, nonprofit organizations and volunteers are grappling with the challenge of finding new, safe ways to engage with older volunteers. READ MORE: http://ow.ly/NGlJ50Cat82

While various organizations have historically collected demographic data, a scan of the field suggests that there is no one-size-fits-all approach across the philanthropic and nonprofit sectors. The Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) is sharing their approach here with the hope of sparking additional conversations among our collaborators and peers, and of encouraging more transparency from other funders in our sector. Does your organization provide professional training programs in the behavioral health sciences? The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) recently opened a funding opportunity through its Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training (BHWET) Program for Professionals. This program focuses on creating and expanding experiential training opportunities (such as internships or field placements) to improve the behavioral health workforce in underserved, high-de...mand, or rural areas. BHWET encourages building relationships with community-based partners (hospitals, crisis centers, first responders, etc.) to improve access to behavioral health services in these regions. Contact Assel Grant Services today! Our team can help with all aspects of preparing the application and managing the grant if you are awarded. If you would like to discuss this possibility, please contact AGS as soon as possible. READ MORE: http://ow.ly/Bq0K50Cblme

As communities across the nation continue to deal with the economic impacts of COVID-19, leaders are looking at immediate ways to keep families afloat, from extended unemployment benefits to stopping evictions. That's the right thing to do, for the individuals most affected by this crisis, and the economy. But while we're doing that, we also need to be looking ahead. How are we preparing people to not only ease back into work but hit the ground running with new skills that will land them better opportunities when the economy opens back up? I always think of the last quarter of the year as the learning season when I attend the Grant Professionals Association (GPA) National Conference and begin thinking about the year past and ahead. This is not an easy process for me. As a grants professional, it is so easy to get bogged down in the daily grind, but this season really forces me and gives me permission to think about my own learning and goals. It reminds me of the Dr. Suess book Oh, The Places You’ll Go. A frie...nd gave me this to me when I graduated college with my bachelor’s degree. At the young age of 20, I could not even begin to imagine where I would go. Some 20 years later, after working as an in-house grant professional and now working in a consultant role, I am using this learning season in 2020 to really reflect on where I have been and where I will still go. There are so many different paths in the grant professional’s work. This just one example my journey. READ MORE: http://ow.ly/yOdt50CbjDO See more

If you've already made charitable giving or volunteering part of your regular routine, you may already know what it took me a while to realize: Even a tiny donation is better than no donation, and that there are many ways to make the world better without straining your finances. While there are legal requirements for nonprofit organizations around transparency and disclosure of financial information, there can also be some grey areas where ethical decisions aren’t as clear. For instance, it can be tempting to apply for and accept funding anywhere you can get it. But what if you serve clients who are struggling with substance use, and a potential funder is known for contributing to the opioid crisis? If accepting money means you are straying from your... mission, or if you have any doubt about the morality of doing business with a certain corporation, it may not be worth the financial benefit. Your goal should be to build funder relationships that you can stand behind and feel good about. Here, we are going to explore a few other ethical dilemmas you may run across when building relationships with funders. Perpetuity... is an intention. And indeed, perpetuity is a very, very long time... There surely is no one right answer to how long our funds should last, but I would urge all of us to drop the concept of perpetuity and replace it with open-ended. None of us lives forever and until proven otherwise, neither does a foundation. What matters, in the end, and what makes a difference in how worthy our legacies, is not how long a foundation lives but how thoughtfully its resources are used. Foundations are often resource rich in ways that other nonprofit organizations are not. One of the most powerful resources foundations have is their people, those on the staff and board of directors who dedicate their time to advancing the mission and goals of the foundation. But: - How much does the sector know about those working in philanthropy? - How might the sector better assess its workplace climate and culture?... - And what might grantmakers do with this information? While grantmakers enjoy access to ample data on the issues, geographic areas, and populations being supported by grant dollars -- and receive regular reports about the efficacy of their own investments -- there is far less data on who works in the field of philanthropy. The Diversity Among Philanthropy Professionals (DAPP) Survey aims to help the philanthropic community better understand its workforce and leadership. The DAPP survey is unique in soliciting anonymous self-reporting from individuals on the staff and board of participating foundations, helping grantmakers to accurately assess the culture and climate of their institutions. The 2020 DAPP Survey officially launches December 1, 2020. READ MORE: http://ow.ly/BHFd50C1F2U
