It’s game day! Let’s go Chiefs!
It has been brought to our attention that these flyers were recently distributed among the neighborhood promoting the NextDoor app. We'd like to remind residents that this is NOT an official Armour Hills Homes Association communication channel - we are not affiliated with this app and do NOT use it. All official AHHA communication will be conducted via our email list, website and Facebook page. If you have any questions, please email us at [email protected].
The Jackson County Health Department - MO has developed a new vaccine survey tool to let residents know when it's their turn to get the vaccine as soon as possible, and get people set up with appointments. Click the link below to fill out this short survey!
At the end of last year, the KC Star produced a series of articles reflecting on their historical role in issues of race in our city. In this article exploring the relationship of Star founder William Rockhill Nelson and Armour Hills developer J.C Nichols, our neighborhood is mentioned by name. That's because J.C. Nichols, the long lauded developer that built the Country Club District that includes Armour Hills, had a primary role in establishing and sustaining racial segrega...tion, with Nelson as his supporter. The restrictive covenants on his properties were especially impactful, forbidding the sale of property to Black people in perpetuity. Nelson and Nichols' shared interest was in beautifully planned and designed neighborhoods. The results of that are undeniable: Armour Hills remains an exemplary place to live to this day, with design that inspires the best residential neighborhoods. That initial commercial success was built on explicit racial exclusion, though. Later, court cases ruled that these racial covenants were not enforceable, making them an afterthought for some but a glaring reminder of enduring inequities to others. Because they were designed to live on in perpetuity, these restrictions were intentionally difficult to remove and remained as sad relics in the governing documents of the Armour Hills Homes Association for generations. Instead of relying on their inability to be enforced, the AHHA board navigated the necessary steps to finally strike these racial covenants once and for all, effective in 2020. While it won't repair the significant damage they caused or heal the lingering impacts of segregation on our city, we hope this step sends a strong message that our tarnished past doesn't hinder our focus on a more inclusive and equitable future.
BE ON THE LOOKOUT! And keep an extra close eye on your pets, as we have reason to believe the perpetrator might have tried to abduct other dogs in the area.
Happy New Year's Eve! However you are celebrating, stay safe and cheers to a happy, healthy 2021!
