A word from one of our cherished alumni! Those of you who experienced this too, might comment and share your heart and memories! "Love that OK KIDS is getting it's life back! It was very important to my entire family. I love even more that it will be lead by people who love Jesus. One day, I'd love to be more involved! What I can't stress enough is HOW Dale and Carolyn ran it. Lots of one on one, promoting friendship within the competition with your competit...ors, praying ahead of the opening number and HAVING an opening number where we all perform as one group. It was about friendship, getting the opportunity to perform, finding others like ourselves, and love for what we do. The banquet parties were the best! Parents were just as much a friend as their child, and they backed up the ideals the Smiths promoted. We HELPED each other, on stage and off! Trophies were not the objective. Winning was NOT our focus. We pushed each other to do better and be better. It wasn't a competition; it was a family-- and it was BECAUSE Dr. Dale's spirit reminded us of it consistently." -Cara Kem

Dear Friends, Dr. Dale here.. A little over a year ago, I spoke to you about the "RELAUNCH" of the AMERICAN KIDS program. I am happy to announce that the relaunch is well underway, with MY HOPE that THE LEGACY of the IDEA behind AMERICAN KIDS is assured for many years to come. But first, there are those that have been 'THE WIND BENEATH THE WINGS' of the program for nearly 40 years. Although too numerous to mention here, I acknowledge that this 'movement' would not have been p...ossible without the contribution of those who provided support as leaders, parents, friends and alumni. AMERICAN KIDS is in a position to relaunch because of your acts of LOVE AND CARING. God bless you for exemplifying the character we hope to continue to instill in our children. For that, I am forever grateful. It is my belief that God gives us GIFTS along with THE CHOICE as to how we may UTILIZE these gifts. I have hoped for some time, that I could be led to individuals who share this same spirit. "Look up, look up!" Dr. Dale's story of overcoming fear and anxiety in troubling times. "When I was a small child my parents would sometimes leave me with my Grandmother. She had a way of helping me through times of fear and anxiety. I have recalled that memory many times, especially, more recently. My Grandmother's name is INDIANA WILSON SMITH. As a very young woman she married my Grandfather, ANDREW JACKSON SMITH. He was a sharecropper. They lived off the 20 acre...s of leased land in Oklahoma. On occasion, my parents would leave me with my grandparents. Their small 2 room leaking house where the only light was one coal oil lamp that Grandmother would carry from room to room as needed. The shadows that this movement created were frightening to this 4 year old boy. As you might guess, I was singing at that age so when I was anxious or afraid of the shadows or fearful because my parents were absent, my Grandmother would ask me to sing. Of course, I was always ready to. Once I had her as an audience listening to my song, my fear and anxiety left the premises. My Grandmother was a spiritual woman, It would appear that she had nothing for which to be thankful and yet she would sing gospel songs as she moved about preparing a meal or cleaning the bare wood floors. She was not a singer but sang anyway. She would also pray intermittently. She would sing, then pray. She was a believer. Sometimes she would pray and suddenly, she would GET HAPPY and start shouting praises to JESUS. It was really enough to scare the pants off a young child. I know because I was there. Then she would start preaching to me and she would say over and over..." LOOK UP DALE, LOOK UP", she would shout. I can still see her with outstretched arms toward Heaven. Even now, 85 years later, I see her lifted arms and hear her encouraging words, words that I use now to encourage all who wish to acknowledge the king "LOOK UP! LOOK UP!" See more
