It's safe to say that Elephant Expedition is making a big splash! It was just eight months ago when we announced an elephant-sized renovation coming to the Zoo... and tomorrow, Elephant Expedition opens back up to the public. This $10 million project includes TONS of updates that are going to be enjoyed by our seven African elephants as well as the many guests who visit them. For our visitors, the renovation includes: ADA-compliant walking paths along the entire elephant outdoor habitat to provide increased viewing and safety. An enlarged viewing area at the elephant demonstration area with a public address system for Zookeeper chats and educational programming. An additional tram stop, for added convenience and less walking for those who desire it. Improved viewing areas, including a new, bigger deck at Elephant Overlook. Additional seating and shaded areas so guests can enjoy a break, plus flexible event space. ADA-compliant restrooms, including an adult changing table. A mother’s room, providing a relaxing, private space to meet the needs of new moms. For our elephants, their remodeled home has its own benefits: A more elephant-friendly pool and waterfall that will allow easier access for our elephants. A water filtration system will also save about 100,000 gallons of water every few days! Additional sand in the elephant habitat, which provides a more comfortable substrate. A safe perimeter for elephants of all sizes, so that even babies could explore the habitat without concern. Additional shade structures for all-weather comfort. Elephant Expedition will be open to the public beginning Friday, May 22, at 9:30 am. Visitors should reserve a timed entry ticket online at www.kansascityzoo.org as the Zoo is currently limiting attendance to aid in social distancing.
